    The French military attacked De Nang in order to stop persecution of and attempts to expel Catholic missionaries. This was the beginning of French Vietnam.

    French Favored the formation of large, French landholdings. They gave out larged grants on land which was confiscated from people who resisted or fled. Unequal distribution of land until end of French rule

    There was an uprising by Vietnamense soldiers in the French colonial army sponsored by VNQDD. It was an attempt to overthrow colonial authority and restore the original monarchy.

    Japan wanted to prvent China from importing arms and fuel through French Indochina. The fighting lasted 4 days, ending in Japanese victory and occupation until the end of WWII.

    Thailand took the opportunity during WWII to take back territory from France. The war ended in May 1941 with a French agreement to concede the territory.
