Between 1918 & 1930 French investment in rubber, coffee, tea, and sugar plantations increased. As well as increase of production in mining and industry by over 600%. Private sector was almost near total control.

There was an uprising by Vietnamense soldiers in the French colonial army sponsored by VNQDD. It was an attempt to overthrow colonial authority and restore the original monarchy.

Japan wanted to prvent China from importing arms and fuel through French Indochina. The fighting lasted 4 days, ending in Japanese victory and occupation until the end of WWII.

Thailand took the opportunity during WWII to take back territory from France. The war ended in May 1941 with a French agreement to concede the territory.

Allies agreed to the post-war occupation of Vietnam by national Chinese troops to the 16th parallel.
