Economic depression had hit Germany hard in those years. Germany's humiliating defeat in WWl was still fresh in their minds. He promised a new and glorious Germany. -
Dachau Concentration Camp opens
The SS opened the Dachau concentration camp outside of Munich, Germany. The first of many cocentration camps opened. It was intended to hold political prisoners. -

At 4:45 am, about 1.5 million german troops invaded Poland all along its border with Germany. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain warned Germany that if they did not retreat there would be war. At 11:15 pm on September 3rd 1939, Britain was at war with Germany. -

The death march of nearly 60,000 prisoners from the Auschwitz camp in southern Poland. -
Liberation Of Auschwitz
Soviet troops liberate the Auschwitz complex. Some reports say that gurards were given instructions to destroy the crematoria and gas chambers. They were also instructed to destroy all written records. -
Hitler Commits Suicide
Adolf Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on April 30th 1945, in his Fuhrerbunker in Berlin, Germany. His wife Eva, committed suicide with him by ingesting cyanide. -
Germany Surrenders
Germany surrendered to the western allies. General Dwight Eisenhower demanded complete surrender of all German forces, those fighting in the east as well as the west. If his demand was not met Eisenhower was prepared to seal off the western front, preventing Germans from fleeing to the west, leaving them in the hands of enveloping Soviet forces.
