    Robert Schuman, french foreign minister, proposed the the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)
  • 1951

    Six European countries, France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg sign the ECSC Treaty
  • 1957

    On 25 March the Treaty of Rome was signed, creating the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom)
  • 1973

    On January 1, Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom join the EEC (9 countries members)
  • 1989

    The fall of the Berlin Wall reunited Germany
  • 1992

    On 7 February the new Treaty is signed in Maastricht. the EEC (European Economic Community) becomes the European Union (EU)

    The single market was born on 1 January. The free movement of goods, services, people and capital
