    The Voyage of the Mayflower
    A group of 102 pilgrims saile from England to America, "the New World", on the ship the Mayflower. The pilgrims left England because they wanted religious and political fredom. The long, difficult journey across the Atlantic Ocean continued for 65 days. There were storms on the way and water entered the ship, but the pilgrims decided to continue on the New World.

    The pilgrims saw land in the distance. They were very excited because their journey was near the end. The shio finally reached land and some pilgrims left to explore the area. They saw a good plac and decided to build a village there. Each family built a small house and they had land to grow vegetables and keep their animals. Later, they calle the village Plymouth.     The fight of the British army and the colonist against the French over land in North America

    The British army and the colonist fought the French over land in North America. The British won the war and got some of the French land. But then, the British governament askrd for taxes from the colonist to pay for the war. The colnist thought this was ridiculous because they didn´t have a representative in the British governament and they refused to pay the taxes. The 13 colonies decided to join together to fight the British.

    The colonies declared independence from Great Britain. Their leaders published the Declaration of Independence on 4th July, 1776. Then, the fighting started. The colonist, led by George Washington, fought many long, diffilcut battles. In the end, they defeated the British and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783. They called their new nation the United States of America (USA).

    The Civil War

    The war began when the Confederates bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina on April 12, 1861. The last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865. The Frech stillvowned some land to the west of thr colonies. The French Emperator Napoleon offered to sell the land to the United States for $15 million. The president, Thomas Jefferson, accept the offer and signed the Louisiana Purchase Agrement.

    Reconstruction

    After the North defeated the South in the Civil War, politicians faced the task of putting the divided country back together. There was great debate about how severely the former Confederate states should be punished for leaving the Union. With the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865, it was up to President Andrew Johnson to try to reunite former enemies. The Reconstruction Acts of 1867 laid out the process for readmitting Southern states into the Union.

    The Glided Age

    The growth of industry and a wave of immigrants marked this period in American history. The production of iron and steel rose dramatically and western resources like lumber, gold, and silver increased the demand for improved transportation. Railroad development boomed as trains moved goods from the resource-rich West to the East. Steel and oil were in great demand.

    Depression and the second Civil War

    October 29, 1929, was a dark day in history. "Black Tuesday" is the day that the stock market crashed, officially setting off the Great Depression. Unemployment skyrocketed a quarter of the workforce was without jobs by 1933 and many people became homeless. President Herbert Hoover attempted to handle the crisis but he was unable to improve the situation. In 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president and he promised a "New Deal" for the American people.
