The History of The Traffic Light

  • The Very First

    The Very First
The first non-electric Traffic light was installed in London and was invented by J.P Knight who was a railroad engineer. He had gotten the idea to make a traffic light because once the automobile was made there were no ways to control when it stops and when it goes. There wasn't light there is on a traffic light in modern-day times instead they used moving pieces of metal, up meant "go" side by side meant "slowdown" and down meant "stop" Where I got this information(Sutori.com)

    Ka-boom
Only after one month, the gas-operated traffic light exploded killing one police officer and the inventer, J.P Knight while there were fixing some of the problems the traffic light was having. In the next 12 days, a new and improved traffic light was ready to go and worked well.

The countdown timer was introduced to traffic lights in the 1990s. The countdown timer helps people know if they have enough time to cross the road before the traffic light changes color. The cars would be able to communicate with the traffic lights, this allowed them to know whether they can make it in time to the next traffic light before it turns red, the signal can also let you know to speed up in order to make the traffic light on time.

    Coming to America
The first electric Traffic light in America was installed on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. It had two colors, red and green, and a loud buzzer for the automobiles to hear, based on the design of James Hoge and invented by Garrett Morgan (who was also the inventor of the gas mask), to provide a warning for when the color is about to change.

    T shaped Traffic light
Garrett Morgan Invented a New version of the traffic light it was contemplated to be made into a T shaped pole to be seen from far away and to be operated from miles away. This operation didn't fail as quickly as the others. It Lasted for more than 20 years can you believe that?!
  • Honk Honk

    Honk Honk
An inventor named Charles Adler Jr. had the idea of inventing a traffic light that could detect vehicles honking and change signals when it hears a honk. A microphone was put on the pole of the traffic light, and once the vehicle got to the signal, all it needed to do was honk and the light would change. However, this made a lot of noisy drivers honking their vehicles, which created a lot of upset people who were walking by and those living near the traffic light.

  • Crosswalk

    Crosswalk
Since there were very many unsafe drivers hitting people while walking to the other side of the street John Peake Knight, a railway engineer made it. Crosswalks and roads have a complicated relationship. On this day in 1951, the world's first crosswalk was officially installed in Slough, England. There because of its stripes, it was and still is known as a crosswalk.
