    The Mongols attacked again with the force of 140,000 men but were unsuccessful due to a typhoon that killed most of these men.

    Emperor Go-Daigo gained the trust and support of unhappy samurai who had survived the invasions of the Mongols and used them to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate and he promised loyalty to the emperor.

    Ashikaga Takauji was a general in the army that Emperor Go-Daigo used to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate. He now overthrew Go-Daigo and became the ruler himself.

    Ashikaga Shogunate

    Ashikaga moved the capital of Japan back to Kyoto and split up the territory of Japan into different regions and gave each one a Daimyo. These Daimyo were responsible for military decisions, policing, the law and economic and taxation matters. This increased the power of the Shogunate but later on this became a disaster and the Daimyos were overthrown and Japan went into Civil war.
