    History of the Atom

  • 400 BCE

    Democritus

    Democritus
Democritus took the idea of the atom from his mentor, Leucippus. Democritus said that all matter consisted of tiny invisible particles and that atoms physically, but not geometrically invisible. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JMdXMulZlqgBEwsACn1i8iNSOxrM7maHAlg1xDBX6Ak/edit)
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
He came up with these four main ideas of the atomic theory.
All matter is made up of matter. They are indivisible and indestructible.
All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties.
Compounds formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.
Chemical reactions are the rearrangements of atoms.

  • E. Goldstein

    E. Goldstein
Goldstein helped discover the proton by discovering that there was a positivly charged subatomic particle in the atom. He also investigated anode rays and discahrage tubes.
  • J.J Thompson

    J.J Thompson
He discoved that cancal rays are assoicated with H+. Thompson used a CRT to determind the charge to mass ration of the electron. He also found that you can not seperate a charge from rays,
  • Marie Curie

    Marie Curie
She disvoerd the two radiocative elements, polonium and radium. Her and her husdand also studied uranimun and thorium and calledtheir decay procces radioactive.
  • Robert Millikan

    Robert Millikan
Robert Milikon conduected a oil drop that helped scientist better understand the charge of an elelcton. Also due to this exoeriment he added to the understanding of the atmoic structe and the atomic theroy.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest Rutherford correctly identified the proton as being inadvisable from the nucleus.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr discoverd that elctrons travle in sperate orbits around the nucleus. He also disocoverd that the number or electros in the outer orbit determind the properties of an element.
  • Erin Schrodinger

    Erin Schrodinger
Erin Schrodinger's took Bohr's model one step further and used mathematical equations to describe the likelihood of finding one electron in a certain position. So where the electrons could be he put an electron cloud around the nucleus. The model is more based on probability rather than certainty. Scinetist use Schrodingers model today for the atom.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
James Chadwick won a noble prize becuase if his work with the neutron. He disocverd that the neutron could be used to probe another nucleus.
