The Pre-colonial Era
The ancient alphabet "alibata" or "baybayin" was discovered during the Pre-Colonial Era. Materials existing in the environment were used to record experiences and transactions by ancient Filipinos. However, oral system were predominant in various areas. The "Umalohokan" or the town carrier existed to disseminate information. And "Datu" or the barangay head existed for he/she is the one responsible in selecting the "Umalohokan". -
The Print Industry and Filipino Freedom
The Del Superior Govierno, the first newspaper in the Philippines was established in 1811. Then was followed by La Solidaridad in 1889. President Ferdinand Marcos then implemented Martial Law in 1972 which forced journalists and newspaper firms to stop in writing news. The Liwayway Magazine then became popular for it serialized Filipino novels, stories, essays and more during the 1900s. -
The European Film Import
Film was also imported by the Europeans. The Lumiere brothers' cinematography film camera and projector invention made its way to the Philippines and showed Filipinos some Spanish-language short films. In early 1900s, short films from America was also imported in the Philippines. Filipinos were inspired by the audiovisual art that lead them in creating "zarzuela". -
The Broadcast Industry
Philippines started with the introduction of telegraph and telephone system during the late 1800s. In 1890, the first telephone system of the country began its operations that reached the whole archipelago. Americans were primarily an essential in bringing the broadcast industry to the Philippines. Radio was then discovered in 1924 which serves as an entertainment to the Filipinos. It was used for commercial purposes but was then seen by the new government to be educational. -
New Features of Magazines
Music lyrics and chords was then featured in magazines in 1970s to 1980s. Then it was followed by fashion and lifestyle trends. Comics then was written and some was turned into paintings, films, and literary stories. -
First Filipino Film
"Dalagang Bukid" which was created by Jose Nepomuceno in 1919 was the first Filipino-produced film. -
Golden Age of Philippine Cinema
The Filipino film industry was able to rise, and then so called "Golden Age of Philippine Cinema" emerged. -
Television
In 1953, DZAQ-TV Channel 3 was the very first television broadcast in the Philippines. Televisions then changed through the years, the content of the programs was foreign which alternated with the coverage and telecast of live (usually political) events. -
EDSA Revolution
The Philippine film industry became freer again, and the early studio producers was then developed into leaders of film production today. -
Martial Law
Film was one of the most heavily censored media during the time of Martial Law. If President Marcos or the First Lady Imelda Marcos finds some film titles offensive, they are then change by the filmmakers. -
Propaganda
The Japanese led the production of propaganda films and tapped Filipinos and actors to make them. -
Local Online Media
The Philippine officially connected to the world of the Internet on March 1994 with the help of PHNET or Philippine Network Foundation. On August 1994, the first commercial Internet service provider was launched by Mosaic Communication or MosCom, Filipinos then were able to go online. In the early 1990s, email communication was established, it was often used by business companies and the government. Technology then developed through the years, social media were created like Facebook.
