    A mobile phone is a device that allows you to make and receive calls to another person, and has been around for years. Over the years this technology has become more advanced, phones nowadays have the ability to make calls, play games, take pictures, listen to music and etc. Looking back at the history of the mobile phone you can see that the first mobile phone was extremely thick, heavy and fragile, the mobile phones nowadays are extremely light, thin and durable.

    The "First" Wireless Device
    In 1908 a professor Albert Jahnke and the Oakland Transcontinental Aerial telephone and power company claimed to have made the first wireless mobile device. They were accused of fraud but the charge was soon dropped, they did not continue to create the wireless mobile phone.

    In 1924, public trials started with the telephone connection between Berlin and Hamburg. In 1925, the company Zugtelephonie A.G. was created to supply train telephones.

    In 1948 a hundred towns managed to sign up for one of AT&T’s mobile telephone service. Mobile Telephone Service was a rarity with only 5,000 customers placing about 30 000 calls each week. Calls were set up manually by an operator and the user had to depress a button on the handset to talk and release the button to listen. The call subscriber equipment weighed about 36 kg. There were only 3 radio channels available to these customers, this meant that only 3 customers in any city could make calls

    Before 1973 mobile telephony was only available to phones installed in cars and vehicles. Motorola created the first hand held mobile phone, Martin cooper made the first phone call on the 3rd of April 1973. The mobile phone was 1.1kg heavy and was 23 cm long. This prototype offered only 30 minutes of talk time and required 10 hours to charge. This was a massive breakthrough in society, this was a massive kick start to the mobile communication industry.

    In 1983 the mobile phone is finally available for the public. It took Dr. Martin Cooper 10 years to perfect his piece of machinery. The first mobile phones were created by Motorola.

    In 1989 Motorla released a new concept of the mobile phone, they called it the flip phone. The flip phone was a phone where the mouthpiece flipped over the top of the keypad. This was the first flip phone ever created.

    In 2002 the first smart phone was created. This smart phone could send and receive emails, however it did not have a speaker therefore it required a headset when using it. Also in 2002 the company Sanyo made a phone that could capture pictures, the user could later download it to a computer and print them out.

    In 2005 a law was passed in California that said telephone companies had to allow customers to return old cell phones to be recycled. This law was passed because cell phones contained harmful chemicals that were harmful when thrown into landfills. Also in 2005 Blackberry had released the Blackberry pearl, which was the first blackberry device to have included a camera and media player.

    In 2007 the first Apple Iphone was released, Apple’s Iphone was a massive leap in technology and it had changed the cellular industry forever. The Iphone had a touch screen and a virtual keyboard, there was no keypad on the phone. The Iphone was capable of doing anything, it allowed users to take pictures, make calls, send text messages, play games, send email and etc. This affects the future massively as it changed the way people lived.
