  • Development of Minecraft Starts

    The start of something big.
  • Period: to

    Pre-Classic

This part of Minecraft's history defined Minecraft as we know it today, just alot simpler.
  • rd-131648

This is the first stable version of Minecraft. It's something, I guess...
  • rd-131655

    rd-131655
This is the first ever version to have a photo of it.
  • rd-132328

    rd-132328
This version added Steves, then called "Mob". They... just do random stuff.
  • rd-132211

    rd-132211
In this version, the Minecraft terrain became flat.
  • rd-20090515

    rd-20090515
This version added some new blocks, like wood and dirt.
  • rd-160052

    rd-160052
In this version, the block particles were added.
  • mc-161616

The main change is that pressing Y swaps the mouse Y-axis.
  • mc-161607

This was the first Minecraft version starting with "mc" rather than "rd"
  • mc-161625

This update fixed textures sometimes not showing and mouse invert issues.
  • mc-161648 (Classic 0.0.1a)

The one thing different in this version is that Notch fixed some mouse look issues. Fun Fact: This is the last un-numbered Minecraft version.
  • Classic 0.0.2a

This is the first classic version of Minecraft, and it added a version counter, FPS counter, and a big fix. When a key is clicked and the game got blurred without being un-clicked, the game will say that that key is pressed. This still occurs in modern Minecraft, making this the game's oldest bug.
  • rd-161348

    rd-161348
Cliffs became more common in this version.
  • Classic 0.0.3a

This version is known for having a white crash screen while playing on an Auss Eee.
  • Classic 0.0.9a

    Classic 0.0.9a
This version lowered the resolution but fixed 2 bugs, but not the white screen bug. This is also the version that added the white overlay to selected blocks. It is unknown why Classic 0.0.4a-8a were not released.
  • Period: to

    Classic

In this stage of Minecraft's development, wool was added as a new material, expanding creative possibilities in the game.
  • Period: to

    Private Alpha

This period of time is called Private Alpha by the Minecraft Wiki. Why? IDK.
  • Classic 0.0.10a

This is the 10th classic version (assuming versions 0.0.4a-8a exsist), adding pause feature (F10 + Esc + Alt) that unhooks the mouse and, as I said before, pauses the game. This version only lasted 4 minites
  • Classic 0.0.11a

    Classic 0.0.11a
This version has two types. 0.0.11a, the original, and c0.0.11a, which is an in-development version of Classic 0.0.12a. This was the first public version. All this version did was it fixed an issue with start and destroy functions making the game unplayable.
  • Period: to

    Early Classic

This period is called Early Classic. I think because it is.
  • Classic 0.0.12a_03

    Classic 0.0.12a_03
This version not only improved performance (again), but it also fixed a bug where on some graphic cards, it was hard to select blocks (for whatever reason). This was also the version where this Mario was made!
  • Classic 0.0.12a_02

This version made nice improvements in terms of performance.
  • Classic 0.0.12a

In this version, bedrock (then called "unbreakeble stone"), water and lava were added, as well as F cycling between render distances, and N making a new "level", what they called a world at the time. Another thing: mobs don't dissapear when a new world is made.
  • Classic 0.0.12a_01

    Classic 0.0.12a_01
All this version did was make it so that mobs are reset on a new world, making it possible to get rid of them again.
  • Classic 0.0.13a

    Classic 0.0.13a
In this update, tons of changes were made: the texture of saplings was altered, lava became opaque with a thick red mist, the jumping height was adjusted back, the auto-jump feature (caused by holding space) was removed, and swimming and sinking speeds were increased, the resolution was improved, the highlighted inventory item. is now displayed in the top right corner, and water and lava always create stone. Finally, a bug fix now makes textures that touch the top and bottom of the map show.
  • Classic 0.0.13a_03

    Classic 0.0.13a_03
Java Edition Classic 0.0.13a_03 was released on May 22, 2009. It includes changes such as humans no longer spawning on level generation and lava lakes no longer spawning above sea level. Pressing ESC while in a menu will also exit out of the menu. One bug related to level saving was fixed in this version. This update is significant as it is the earliest version in the launcher that is not a developer build.
  • Classic 0.0.14a

Java Edition Classic 0.0.14a, released on May 27, 2009, was big. It introduced new blocks such as sand, gravel, ores, logs, and leaves. It also improved world format for saving entities and introduced a new terrain generator. Notably, this version included the addition of clouds and controls for scroll-wheel block picking. However, the version is currently lost and not archived. It has lots of fake copies though.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_01

Classic 0.0.14a_01 was a version of Minecraft aimed at fixing a bug that prevented players from loading saved worlds in the previous version. However, this release introduced new issues such as the inability to place blocks in liquids, NullPointerException errors for some players, black or white screen display for others, and problems with mouse control. These bugs were discussed in IRC logs. Notably, many features credited to this version were added in 0.0.14a.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_03

    Classic 0.0.14a_03
In Classic 0.0.14a_03, there were bug fixes, performance improvements, and changes to game mechanics to enhance the player experience. Notable changes include fixing a bug that caused the game to crash when placing blocks in the same space and adjusting how blocks are placed and interact with each other.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_04

In this update, spawn point saving and reloading using the Enter key has been added, and pressing R now sends the player back to the world's spawn point. However, this version had an issue with mouse controlling.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_05

The only thing that changed was that Notch attempted to fix the mouse movement code, but the problem was made worse as the mouse now does not work at all and cannot lock into the game.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_07

    Classic 0.0.14a_07
This version FINALLY (finally) fixed the mouse movement code. There is also now a picture (hooray)
  • Classic 0.0.14a_06

In this version, the attempted fix for the mouse movement code was once again unsuccessful, but, the issue only occurs when the mouse is moved quickly.
  • Classic 0.0.14a_08

    Classic 0.0.14a_08
In this update, saplings now appear fully bright when in the shade and turn invisible when selected while in the shade. Additionally, trees now have a (+) shape for the top layer. The update also includes improved framerate, shadows on water and lava surfaces, white fog instead of blue, and fog applied to shadow surfaces. The terrain.png file of this version also seems to have an early texture for wool, clouds, or snow blocks.

    Multiplayer Test

This sub-phase of Notch focused on adding multiplayer, adding other things along the way.
