The First Photographic Camera
The Kodak was the first photographic camera, which was created by George Eastman. The Kodak was simple enough to use, allowing anyone who can press a button use it. The flexible film rolls that came with the camera were used to take the photographs. -
The invention of motion pictures
In 1892, Thomas Edison and Dickson were the first two individuals to create motion pictures. This was done when they were trying to discover a way to make images move. Soon after their creation, two individuals would recreate and publicly share these with many people in one area. -
The Lumiere Brothers and the Projector
In 1895, the Lumiere brothers created the projector. It was capable of showing motion pictures to many people at once. The motion pictures shown were very short, but very new to many individuals. -
The first of them all
The first movie was created in 1903 and was considered and epic, being 12 minutes long. It was created by Edwin Porter, who was an employee of Thomas Edison. The movie only had 14 scenes in total. -
The nickelodeons
Created in 1905, Nickelodeons would charge 5 cents per admission for people to see short films. The films were silent, so someone would be upfront playing the piano and adding sound effects. These were usually accompanied with a Vaudeville act or two. -
The first monopoly
Around 1910, Thomas Edison and a few other companies created a trust known as the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC). They created it for money and could charge anything for the price of a film. People who attempted to make movies without Edison's equipment would be hunted down and their equipment was destroyed. Sometimes, actors and directors would be harmed in addition to their studio being destroyed or wrecked. -
Films with color
Color in films was experimented on in 1912. It wasn't until 1939 that films like The wizard of Oz and Gone with the wind used color. The experiments with color in films would lead to a less headache inducing experience with colored films. -
Talkies and The first sounded movies
Sound in films wasn't produced until the 1920s. The people behind it all thought it wouldn't work, but it ended up making tons of money and shocking many. By 1937-1940 silent films were no longer being created. -
Technicolor and Problems
Technicolor is a multiprocess capture that allows color in films. This greatly increased a film's beauty at the expense of the actors and producers. The heavy and sensitive equipment required many people to man the camera, and it wasn't cheap to get the crew. The actors however, had to deal with high heat from really bright lights, which caused many health problems later in their life. -
The first Blockbuster
The first film to start the blockbuster business was Jaws. It was released during the summer due to the developers thought it would fail, but they were wrong. Later, more successful films started showing up in the summer. This also signified the start of computer generated images. (CGI) -
The use of cgi
In the 1990s, films began using cgi to create images and it helped with the creation of films. Most films that were successful usually had some cgi to reduce the need of actors and props at the time. The advancements made using cgi and digital tech has lead to more digital films. -
The reversal
In 2000, the transition to digital from film has began. By 2010, almost no one used film to make movies, as digital was easier to use and make films. Today, movies are cgi heavy and superhero movies are the juggernauts of the film industry.
