Early 1900s
Women wore loose-fitting style of dress. They wore full skirts but with a shorter length. Artifical silk was also invented. -
The 1920s The Flappers
Coco Chanel introduced sportswear garments for everyday wear. Women wore trousers and flappers came into play. The flappers wore shoreter hemlines and shorter hair. The dresses were loose fitted to make the chest smaller. Women wanted to dress faster and soon the "one hour dress" was created that was made in one hour. -
The 1930s-1950s Invention of Nylon
Movie stars influenced the fashion world in the 1930s-50s. They soon invented nylon. Nylon was cheaper than silk and more durable. Many women wore the nylons over their legs. Throoughout the 1940s and 50s women wore long hemlines and narrow shoulders. They also wore tightly fitted bodices with long, full, or narrow skirts. -
The 1960s The Hippies
In the 1960s hippies were the new style. Bright colors were presented. Many things such as peasant embroidery, cheesecloth, and safari jackets. -
The 1970s The Disco Dance Fever
In the 1970s people went to clubs to dance and the styles were very flashy. The styles consisted of, gold leopard print, stretch halter jumpsuits, and white clothing that glowed under a black light. -
1980s The Power Look
In the 80s the power look was introduced. Women wore shoulder pads and fitted pants suits, some women even wore ties. -
The 1990s Grunge
Americans started to dress down. Many americans liked the comfortable style of sports clothes. Grunge is a style that started by youth culture in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The grunge look is messy, uncomed, and disheveled.
