American Common school period (1840-1880)
--The Morrill Act was established in 1862 and required every state to establlish a college.
-The singificant president was Abraham Lincoln.
-The role of teachers were still basic because most people lived in the rual area.
-African Amereican education happened in the north, kindergarden was invented, the McGuffey Readers happened because of new textbooks.
-Horace Mann worked hard to make public education free

American Progressive Period (1880-1921)
-The role of teachers during this time was professtional.
-The presidents were Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard, Woodrow Wilson.
-Schools were still highly segregated for African Americans.
-In 1917 the Smith-Hughes Act was established to support vocational education.
-John Dewey was an educational philosopher and Maria Montessori was a doctor who tried to help kids who had a difficulty learning.
-School curriculum was that students should think critically and independently.
