    Folklore
    Folklore is a genre that is composed of stories/myths/legends that have been passed down orally from generation to generation. They are rich in culture and have changed and been molded/reworked to fit modern times and not until recently have authors created printed versions of these stories. Key indicators of this genre are that they are traditional stories, myths, and or legends. They can also be nursery rhymes or songs from the past and often don't have a known author.
  • Nonfiction

    Nonfiction
    They are informational sources meant to explain or describe a specific subject. Because children are so naturally curious about the world that they inhabit nonfictional books are often more widely available than the various nonfiction genres in school libraries. They come in a variety of formats from picture books all the way to audiobooks. They cover many topics, subjects, and ideas as well as various time settings throughout history such as prehistoric up till today's time.

    Poetry and Verse
    Simply said poetry is a way of expressing important ideas and concepts in the most simple way possible. It often has a rhythmic flow and pleasing to the ear as well as the mind and the various human emotions. The best poetry and verse is said to make an experience or idea seem extraordinary and really connect with its reader. Some key indicators of Poetry and Verse are Condensed language, imagery, and figurative language.

    Fantasy is a genre that depicts actions and characters and events that could never happen in the real world. It is a very imaginative genre that is appealing to both adolescents and adults. It can range from picture books all the way to full-blown novels. Authors of this genre often create vivid environments to make the reader believe the feats can be possible. Some key indicators of this genre are superhuman abilities, talking animals, & of course events that could not happen in the real world.
  • Historical Fiction

    Historical Fiction
    Tells stories set in the past. They are based upon events that happened or could have happened during that time of which the stories are taking place. They range from pre-historic times til events that took place in the 20th century. The genre was once dominated with all white male perspectives but in modern times has been updated to reflect multiple cultures and genders. This genre requires writers to create characters suitable for the time to recreate a specific event or occurrence.

    Science Fiction is a genre that is a fantasy type form literature based on the idea of what might happen based on various facts and or theories. It often is a projection of what might happen in the future while making sure that the events are lifelike, probable, and relative to today's and stresses that it may indeed happen one day. Simply put it follows all physical laws, scientific principles, has logical outcomes, and typically is futuristic.
  • Contemporary Realistic Fiction

    Contemporary Realistic Fiction
    It's based upon modern times with events, settings, and events that occur in real life. The plots, themes, and characters stay in the realm of reality and possibility. They are often based upon human emotions and relate to harsh subjects such as drugs, divorce, hunger, growing up, making friends, and falling in love. In this genre, the characters often seem genuine and take place in a contemporary setting.
  • Biography & Memoir

    Biography & Memoir
    Is meant to tell a story about a real person's life. These are typically about famous people such as authors, writers, actors, sports players, world leaders, artists, explorers. There are also some about "normal people" as well. In today's times, it had become a very culturally diverse genre. It can be written by themself or an author aiming to portray their life story or them in a specific memorable, honorable, or historical event that their life was a great part of.
