The Camera Obscura 1000AD The first camera was called 'Camera Obscura'. It was developed by the Ancient Greek and Ancient Chinese people. This camera projected images when light was passed through it. The Camera Obscura was a small box with a hole in it, where the light passed through (Soft Schools, 2015). -

The 'Camera Obscura' was invented much earlier, it could only make projections, not take photos. Years later an inventor named Joseph Niepce used the camera to take the first photograph. He used a chemical called 'silver nitrate' knowing that it changes colour when exposed to light, to take the first photograph. The photograph took 8 hour to develop (Soft Schools, 2015). -
The Daguerreotype Camera
Louis Daguerre invented this camera which was able to develop the image in only 30 minutes using light exposure, therefore building on Joseph Niepce's idea (Soft Schools, 2015). -
Frederick Scott Archer
This man invented a way for photos to be developed in seconds. He did this by creating a way for glass negatives to be developed. This was called the 'Wet Collodion Process'. He revolutionised photography (Soft Schools, 2015). -
Kodak Camera
George Eastman released the first Kodak camera in 1888. This handheld camera had a role of 100 pieces of film in it, meaning people could take 100 photos with it before it was at full capacity. They would then send the film back to the company and they would print the photos (Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 2014). -

Edwin Herbert released the first Polaroid land camera which was able to produce a photo print in a minute. The photo is printed from the camera itself. -

The first digital camera was developed by Steven Sasson. This camera could only take photos in black and white, and took 23 seconds to take a photograph. Each photograph was saved onto a cassette tape. -

The first professional digital cameras were made available by Kodak (Mirnet, 1998). -
Samsung release the first camera phone
Samsung release the first camera phone in 2000, made in Japan. You would take photos with the phone, and then connect to to the computer to access the photos. This camera had 0.35 megapixels (Digital Trends, 2013). -
Today camera
The iPhone 7 and 7 plus are the camera phones that are most current. The cameras in these phones has 12 megapixels (Apple Inc, 2016).
