Ever where the term "french fries" originates? Well, while Thomas Jeferson was in the White House, he had potatoes severed to him in the "french manner." This referred to the potatoes being cut small and deep fried. Thus, french fries were introduced to America. Today, it is the second most popular fast food item. -
Fast Food Vending Machines
Automats,created in Berlin by Max Sielaff, were machines that dispensed food when money was inserted. The invention soon appeared in NYC! Joseph Horn and James Hardart opened their own, American version of this innovative machine. -
Opening of White Castle
In Mach of 1921 the first fast food chain resetuarant opened i in Witchita, Kansas: White Castle. During this period, people were hesitant to eat grond beef; but, the resturant was able to popularize the food through their famous hamburger sliders. These are mini-hamburgers that are cooked in onion (along with the bun) and topped with onions and a pickle before being inserted in the bun and served. Today, White Castle is still very popular! -
Let's go to the Drive-In!
Before the drive-thru, drive-ins were extremely popular! In Dallas, Texas, Jesse G. Kirby and Rueben W. Jackson opened the first drive-in called pig stand. It was a big hit! People pulled up to the resturants in their cars and the waiters and waitresses served them. The people were able to eat in the comfort of their cars. Today, Swensons and A&W are two fast food restaurant chains that still utilized the drive-in concept. -
"Fast Food" is not a real word!?
In 1951, Merriam-Webster added the term "fast food" into the dictionary because of its bombing popularity. -
