One white woman named Skeeter organizes a group of maids to get together to talk about their lives as black maids. Two other maids named Aibileen and Minny tell Skeeter about what their lives are like. -
Miss Hilly says Aibileen shouldn't use the same bathroom as the Leefolt's
Miss Hilly tells Miss Leefolt that the help should not use the same bathroom as them. The help is black, and blacks carry diseases, according to Miss Hilly. -
Minny finds out Miss Hilly is telling everyone that she stole from Miss Hilly's house.
Miss Hilly has been going around town telling veryone that Minny stole from her house. That is why she fired her as her maid. Now, Minny can't find any work because, everyone thinks she is a thief -
Minny gets a new job.
After endless days of searching for someone that would want Minny as their made, Aibileen finally finds someone who hasn't heard about the rumors Miss Hilly has speard about Minny. Her name is Miss Celia. -
Aibileen finally agrees to answer questions for Skeeter about her job for her new writiing job.
Skeeter has been asking Aibileen to answer questions about what it's like to be a black maid. One of the people at the newspaper publishing place has agreed to let her interview black maids. Aibileen has been refusing because, it's dangerous, but she finally gave in because, she believes this can change the way the black and white society is. -
Minny joins Aibileen and Skeeter to write about their lives as black maids
Aibileen has been trying to get Minny to join her and Skeeter but Minny thinks she is crazy. She thinks it is far too dangerous for them. Finally, she gives in and starts to tell Skeeter what her life is like. -
Miss Hilly notices that Skeeter has papers in her bag about the laws in Mississippi.
Skeeter was at an event for white ladies with Miss Hilly, when she left her purse at the table and went inside the house. Miss Hilly found the papers about the Mississippi laws. She then came in the house to find Skeeter talking to Miss Hilly's Maid, and threatens to tell someone if she doesn't put her advertisment in the paper. -
Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minny get the news from Misses Stein about their writings.
Skeeter, Minny, and Aibileen are pretty sad because, Misses Stein, the editor, says that their book is only going to be making a few thousand copies. They are told that their profit is also going to be very small, but they will take what they can get. -
Aibileen is fired from the Lefolt's, and this makes Mae Mobley very upset.
Mae Mobley is the child that Aibileen looks after and they both have grown very fond of each other. However, Miss Hilly influeces Elizabeth to fire her, and this makes Mae Mobley very upset, so Aibileen asks her if she rememeber what she taught her and Mae says "you is kind, you is smart, you is important", and then Aibileen leaves. -
