    Starr and her family gets introduced

    Starr Carter is introduced as a sixteen-year-old girl living in Garden Heights, a predominantly black and low-income neighborhood. She is talking about how she is living two lives - the one at her predominantly white private school, and the other in her neighborhood.

    Starr reunites with Khalil at party

    Starr is at a party with her brother half sister Kenya and her black friends. Because of Starr's two different lives, she doesn't feel like she belongs there. Then sees across the room, Khalil, her childhood best friend. Starr and Khalil catch up and laugh like old times.

    Multiple gunshots at the party

    Starr hears people arguing outside, then multiple gunshots get fired. People panic and scream as they rush out of the house, Starr among the others. Khalil takes Starr's hand outside, taking her to his car.

    Khalil gets shot

    Khalil stops the car to kiss Starr. After a while, the police show up. Starr has learned from her father, Maverick, all the rules about how black people should be around white cops. Apparently, Khalil has not learned these rules. So Khalil argues with the cop and reaches for his hairbrush in the car. The cop "thinks" this is a gun; and shoots Khalil. Khalil dies.

    Riots in Garden Heights

    People in the neighborhood and town hears about the killing and gets angry. The riots and demonstrations start right after the killing of Khalil. The riots are portrayed as a direct response to the systemic racism and injustice in the justice system, and the anger and frustration that have been building up in the black community for years. This is one of the most "peaceful" race riots shown in the film.

    Starr talks to the police

    The day after the killing of her friend Khalil, she talks to the police at the police station. The police are asking a lot of questions about Khalil's selling off drugs and how he was before he died. This is when Starr realizes they are not investigating the policeman, but are finding negative things about Khalil. She is overwhelmed and scared, so her uncle, who is also a policeman at the station, takes her with him home.

    Students at Williamson skipping school to protest

    Students at the white, privileged school where Starr goes, skip school to "protest" for the Khalil case. This really made Starr upset, considering they just do it to drop school. Starr saw how different the protests were. The brutal, engaged protest with the black people. Compared to the fun protest with people playing music at the school.

    Starr's father, Maverick, speaks up

    Starr's father, Maverick, tells her about his own experiences with police brutality and the history of racism in their community. Standing up for your own color and rights is very sentral in Starr's family, mostly because of Maverick. Maverick is almost all for Starr speaking up about being the only victim to Khalili's death. Not only standing up for the whole community; but for their family friend Khalil, as he would have done.

    Starr's mother, Lisa, worries about Starr's safety

    Starr's mother, Lisa, worries about Starr's safety and wants her to distance herself from the community. Starr, being the only witness, can get a lot of unwanted attention from both the black and white community. Starr's mother does not like this, and she doesn't want her to be in more contact with the police as necessary.

    Starr worries about her boyfriend, Chris

    Starr has always been worried about having a white boyfriend. She has never introduced him to her family. So, she is scared about Chris's reaction to her being in the media and standing up for Khalil. She is ignoring him, and he is very confused. He does not know about her being the only witness, but he finds out.

    Starr and her family attend Khalil's funeral. Khalil's funeral is not very sad, but more engaged about standing up for him. Khalil's is only one out of many black lives that have been lost this way. April Oprah, a community activist, delivers a powerful eulogy for Khalil, highlighting the impact that his death has had on the community and calling for justice and accountability for the police officer who killed him. She wants to interview Starr

    Starr's decides to testifies in front of a grand jury

    Starr's friend, Hailey, makes racist comments and refuses to listen to Starr's perspective. This really makes Starr upset so she decides to testify in front of a grand jury about what happened to Khalil. She was very scared; but ends up feeling like she did a great job offending Khalil.

    The interview is conducted by a TV news anchor, who asked Starr questions about her experiences and her activism. Starr's face is not shown. Starr speaks passionately about her beliefs, and her words resonate with many viewers. The interview also attracts the attention of people in Starr's community, and her words became a rallying cry for those who were fighting for justice and change. Starr is talking about the huge drug lord King in her neighborhood.

    Starr was wearing a black dress, and Chris was supposed to pick her up. They ended up sitting in the limousine and talking about Khalil's death. This is the moment when Chris finds out that she was the only witness. Chris wants to meet Maverick, so they go home to Starr after the prom.

    Starr's brother, Seven, gets into a fight with a gang member and is hospitalized. This gang member turns out to be King. Seven hides at his biological mother's house with his half-siblings Kenya and Keyara, but then King shows up. They all run out the back door to escape.

    The grand jury decides not to indict the police officer who killed Khalil, sparking protests in the community. Starr makes sure Kenya, Chris, and Keyara get to a safe place. While hurt Seven and Starr gets into the protest. The whole town was out protesting and the cops were shooting gas at them, but Starr was ready to stand up for Khalil and the community.

    She begins to shout out the names of those who have been victims of police brutality. As she does so, the crowd around her joins in, chanting the names of other victims and demanding justice.The police is trying to stop her, as the crowd highlight the widespread impact of police brutality. The scene is also a turning point for Starr, as she realizes that she can use her voice and her platform to effect change and fight for justice.

    King burns down Maverick's store

    Starr and Seven left the protest and went to their father's store, but King set it on fire. They panic trying to get out of the back door, but the men in the buildings around them come to help. Maverick shows up himself, and they get out safely and meet their family.
