    Reuniting with Khalil
    At the beginning of the book, Starr Carter attends a party with her best friend Kenya. She isn’t very happy about being at a party, but Kenya forced her to go. After Kenya leaves with some other friends, she meets her childhood friend Khalil. She hasn’t seen him in years, but the two of them used to be extremely close when they were younger. They have a nice talk about life when all of a sudden gunshots are fired. They leave together in Khalil's car.

    One-fifteen
    Starr is shocked after hearing the gunshots. They drive for a while when they suddenly get pulled over by a cop. She realizes what her father once taught her, “Keep your hands on the dashboard and do not talk unless you are spoken to". But Khalil gets frustrated and talks back. He gets pulled out of the car. When he reaches for his hairbrush, the officer mistakes his intentions and shoots him three times in the back. This is the second time she watches her best friend getting killed.

    The police ask Starr to come to the station for questioning. Starr tries her best to explain, but she feels like the detectives are putting words in her mouth. They seemed more concerned about what Khalil did for a living, rather than how his life was taken. She felt like she betrayed Khalil because she knew she was talking on his behalf as well.

    Starr is anxious about going to Khalil’s funeral. Khalil’s grandmother tells everyone that there is a witness, that needs to help fight for Khalil’s justice. At this time, Starr does not want anyone to know she is the witness because it could affect her double life as a student at the prep school and her life in Garden Heights. Everyone gets upset when King, a well known drug dealer from Garden Heights, shows up because this confirmes that Khalil was dealing drugs.

    Riots in Garden Heights

    Riots in Garden Heights
    The citizens of Garden Heights got furious when they found out what happened to Khalil. At one point it looked like one-fifteen weren't going to get any sort of punishment. This made the community even more enraged. Their anger began in peaceful protests shouting, “justice for Khalil”. It later escalated into dangerous riots. Starr still did not want anyone to know she was there and did not join these protests.

    The Williamson students protest

    The Williamson students protest
    Starr and her brothers attend a “white school”. The news spread fast and the students in her class, including her friends at Williamson, use Khalil’s death to ditch class. These kids did not care about Khalil at all, Starr knew that which made her furious. When one of her friends, Hailey, later throws a fried chicken joke, Starr finally stands up against her friend and her racist comments.

    Maverick
    Starr’s father, Maverick, and Mr. Lewis are having a verbal argument in front of their stores, when a police car shows up. Both assure the officers that nothing bad is going on, but they seem to have an urge to arrest Maverick. They detain him in front of his children. Starr was certain that this happened because they knew she was the witness.

    The biggest gang banger in Garden Heights threatens Starr and her family. He tells her father that “she should know when to be quiet”. He does this because he knows that to help Khalil’s case, Starr has to tell the whole truth about Garden Heights. The King Lords later try to scare Starr so she doesn’t talk about King and what he does. They shoot at her house, but luckily no one gets hurt.

    The interview

    The interview
    Starr gets interviewed on live television by the. She is scared, even though her identity is being kept secret. She talks and recaps everything from that night. Starr finally realizes that she is good enough to speak on Khalil's behalf, as well as the other people in need of Justice.

    DeVante

    DeVante is a boy from the neighborhood who is in big trouble with King. It was his brother who got shot and killed at the party. He ran into Maverick's shop to hide from King Lords, and Maverick decides to help him. King knows that the Carters are helping DeVante. To protect him, they take him to Uncle Carlos’s house. Starr feels like this is a “do-over” for both her and her father after what they couldn’t do to help Khalil

    Prom
    The day of Starr and Seven’s prom is here. Starr realizes that something is off with her boyfriend, Chris, the minute he picks her up. He is distant and doesn’t talk to her. After a while, Starr asks him what his problem is. Chris is disappointed in her for not telling him that she is the witness. He recognized her on TV. Starr feels like her double life has been torn, and she can no longer hide her “ghetto” side from her boyfriend.

    The Grand Jury

    The Grand Jury
    The day that Starr has been dreaded is here. She is going to testify in front of the grand jury. Her attorney from the movement “Just Us for Justice” has helped her a lot and is very supportive, but she still feels anxious about it all. Starr explains the incident as detailed as she can, and is praying to God that she doesn’t ruin Khalil’s opportunity for Justice.

    The riots

    The riots
    After the grand jury fails to indict one-fifteen, Garden Heights erupts into riots and peaceful protests. Starr, Seven, Chris, and DeVante want to go to Mavericks store to protect it. When they get there, they see the riots. Starr sees her attorney standing in a car with a bullhorn shouting “No Justice No Peace”. At that moment, Starr knew that she had to use the most powerful weapon she has. Her voice. She goes up on the car and starts talking, admitting to the world that she is the witness.

    The shop fire

    After the police throw teargas at the rioters, Starr and her brother take everyone to Maverick’s store to get milk. Suddenly, when the four of them are alone in the store, King decides that this is the perfect time to get his revenge on the Carters. He sets fire to the front door. The kids try to get out the back but the door is locked. Luckily, Maverick shows up and gets them out just in time

    The whole neighborhood is tired of King always getting away with his crimes. When the police shows up, King denies having lit the store. That is when everyone starts telling the truth about King, to support Maverick. He and his boys finally gets arrested, which is a huge step for Garden Heights as a community

    Starr part 1
    Starr used to be the girl with the double life. It got to the point where she felt trapped between Garden Heights and Williamson and did not know where she belonged or who she was. In the end, she finally opens up to the people around her and becomes more self-confident in being an activist for people who needs justice from police brutality.

    Starr part 2
    She realizes that keeping a double life is a lot harder than being herself and that the real ones will not judge her for being the girl from the hood nor the black girl attending a prep school. Through everything she has grown into someone who is confident and can stand for what she believes in. She promises to keep Khalil’s memory alive and to continue to fight for Justice.
