The party where Starr meets her old friend
In the beginning of the book Starr went to a party, that her friend Kenya forced her to go to. At this party she feels like she dosent belong there, because she isn't like most of the teenagers in Garden Heights when it comes to parties and stuff like that. At this party Starr meets her old best friend, a friend she was with everyday when they were younger, Khalil. When they are catching up a little bit, some gunshots are fired. They run away and leave together in Khalil's car. -
What happened on their way home
While Khalil was driving himself and Starr home from the party, they get pulled over by the police. The police asked Khalil for some ID. While Starr knew what she was doing and puts her hands on the dashboard, Khalil started to back talk the cop. In that moment the cop tells Khalil to stand out of the car and stand where he is, but Khalil looks in the car to ask Starr if she is okay. This is when the police (115) shots Khalil three times, and let Starr see her best friend die infront of her. -
Natasha
This wasn't the first time Starr saw her friend get killed in front of her. When she was 10years old, she, Khalil and Natasha were playing outside when a car passed by and shot Natasha. This is why Starr and her brothers goes to a different school, Williamson. -
Interview with the police
Starr had to talk to the police about what happened at the place Khalil got killed. She gave the police all of the information about how the cop (115) killed Khalil. But they were more interested in Khalil as a person and that he probably was a drug dealer. -
Khalils Funeral
At Khalil's funeral his grandma convinces everyone to help fight for justice for Khalil.
Starr was still not comfortable with talking about what happened and she and her family didn't want people to know that she was the witness, because they were scared of Starr being expose to thing that can destroy her life. -
King
King is the best drug dealer in the neighbourhood, and he is the one who runs it. He gets to know quickly that Starr is the witness, and starts to threat her whole family about Starr speaking out and helping Khalil, because Starr can't help Khalil unless she tells everybody the truth about Garden Heights and that King is the big gambler in the town. -
Protest at Williamson
The word about Khalil's death as been spread quickly out of Garden Heights, when it came to Starr's school, Williamson, they started a protest for justice for Khalil. Starr was happy at first when she saw that so many white people fights for justice. But after she met her friends she realised that they are just doing that to skip classes. Everyone left except from Starr, her boyfriend and some other students. -
Devante
Devante is a King lord, and hides from King. Maverick decides to help him and gives him a job at the store and a place to stay. -
Snitching on The Kings
Mr. Lewis is an older man that owns a barbershop close to maverick's grocery store. Mr. Lewis isn't afraid of the King or the Kings, so he snitched on the kings on TV and said that they have been terrorizing Graden Heights for years, and then he named one of them, King. -
The Police came
After the TV interview with mr.lewis, Maverick had to tell Mr.Lewis how stupid snitching on TV was.
They discussed when a patrol car pulled up and two cups were standing in front of them. They asked for ID, and right after they reed Mavericks name they knew he was the father of the witness, Starr. So they took him to the ground in front of his children and everyone.
They let him go afterwards, so he didn't need to go to he police station. -
The jury
Starr had to testify against the jury about Khalil's death. She had to give every single detail from the night Khalil died, which made her very nervous and scared. -
115 didn't get arrested
When people found out that 115 didn't get arrested, rioters started happening over the whole town. People went crazy and really fight for justice. They fight for Khalil and the future. -
Store on fire
Starr, Chris, DeVante and seven were in the store, and as a revenge King sets the store on fire with the kids inside. He thought he did it, but the one thing he didn't know was that people around will help them out no matter what, when they see it. They will do everything in their power to get King into prison. -
Chris
Chris is starr's white boyfriend, she kept him out from Garden Heights a long time. Maverick wasn't a big fan of Chris at first but after the rioters he had more respect for him. -
Ms.Ofrah
Ms. Ofrah was starr's lawyer and followed her since Khalil's funeral to the end. At the end starr used her weapon and led the rioters, she speaked up and used her voice.
After that night, Ms.Ofrah called her in the morning and apologize for putting Starr in a bad situation, but she was also very proud of her.
