Train ride to Berlin
Erik meets Dieter on the train and he gets told about Walter's plan to get him to work for Weinstein Industries. Erik was under surveillance by the SS. Dieter offers Erik a position with the SS. -
German troops take over Austria
The Germans invade Austria. Walter and Rachel are Jews, and are sent to a concentration camp, while Erik takes over Weinstein Industries. -
Marriage to Marie
Erik proposes to Marie, and she says yes. The SS run a background check on her. It shows that she has Jewish blood in her family. Erik manages to keep this hidden and marries her. They later have two daughters together, Susanne and Louisa. -
Meeting Hitler
Erik and Marie meet Hitler, who congratulates them on their wedding, and thanks Erik for his work for Germany. Hitler tells Erik that he is free to leave his position if he wishes to, and that no action would be taken against him if he does leave. -
Meeting Abraham
Erik is told to work with some Judenrats (jewish people willing to be police) from the ghetto, to get more Jews to turn themselves in. He meets Abraham, one of the Judenrats, who ends up becoming very close to Erik. Abraham helps trick other Jews into going to the concentration camps. -
Bach's death
Abraham seeks revenge on Bach for killing his family. Erik arranges it for him. He sends Bach to a sketchy ghetto area and tells no one about it. Abraham is alone with Bach and slowing tortures him to death. Bach slowly dies. -
The threatening calls
Erik starts receiving calls from a woman and man, asking about Marie's heritage. Later, he finds out it is Sarah behind those calls. Sarah is mad that Erik only saved her, but killed the rest of her family. She threatens to write an anonymous letter the his superiors about Marie's Jewish blood. -
The deaths of Sarah and Dieter
Erik sends Dieter to where Sarah and her cousin are hidden. Dieter talks to Sarah and tries to convince her to not send the letter. Sarah has gone mad and says she will send the letter no matter what. Erik sends Abraham to "take care of" Sarah and her cousin. Dieter tags along and ends up getting shot by Abraham. Erik and Abraham leave the village before anyone finds out they were there. -
Planning the fake vacation
Erik and Abraham can see that the Germans will lose the war, and because of Erik's position in the SS, he will be executed as a war criminal. They decide to plan an escape to South America before the war is over. They plan to have a fake kidnapping on Erik's family's vacation. -
The fake vacation
Erik and his family leave for Kasdorf, where they planned their vacation. They enjoy the first few days in Kasdorf. They are under watch by many German security guards. Erik gets them to leave except for one, officer Strasser. -
The kidnapping
The fake kidnapping happens. Officer Strasser is nearby, tries to save Erik and ends up getting shot. They are brought to a safe house, well hidden from the authorities. -
The affair with Eva
They meet Eva at the safe house. Eva flirts with Erik, saying that she wants him and that Marie doesn't ever have to know. Erik has an affair with her, but Marie doesn't find out. Eva decides to escape along with Erik and his family to South America -
The fight between Marie and Eva
They all finally leave the safe house. They have to hitchhike to the border. At the border, they will use their fake paperwork to cross. On the way there, Marie and Eva get in a fight and Marie ends up breaking her leg. It slows the group down because they have to carry her. -
Marie's death
Because of the German authorities that have taking over the border, they have to find a new way to cross. They cross over a lake, but there is a current and they lose track of Marie. They lose her and assume she is dead. They continue without her. -
The ending
Erik's children manage to escape with Abraham and Eva. Erik gets arrested, but gets permission to visit his father and sister before his execution. At his father's home, he discovers that Marie is alive. He goes and visits her. She forgives him for leaving her at the lake. Marie must stay hidden. -
The ending
Erik goes mad. He goes to a store in the middle of the night. He pretends he is the Führer and says a fake speech. There are armed policemen in front of him. Suddenly, a bomb hits the store and we assume he dies. The story ends from Marie's point of view. She is with her kids now, but she still thinks Erik is still alive and might join them again someday.
