This was an important event because it was the start of the war. By Austria rejecting Serbia's offers this caused Austria to start the war. Also, on the same day, Serbia's ally Russia joined the action.

Brittish army tried to relieve the pressure of the French. The Brittish attacked Germans NW of Verdun. This place was called the Valley of Somme river.

Germans turned to submarine warfare in the Atlantic Ocean. Brittish Naval blockade caused food shortage in Germany. Germany fought back. Germany annoucned without any warned that any ship in British waters would sink. This was called unrestricted submarine warfare.

Communist leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin siezed power. He wanted to end his countries involvment in the war. One of his first acts was to provide Germany with a truce.

Germany & Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Ending the war between them. The treaty was extremely hard on Russia. Russia's withdrawl allowed Germany to send nearly all its forces to Western Front.
