The sinking of the Lustania
A German U-boat fired a torpedo at the Lusitania, a British Ocean Liner, which sank the ship and riled up Americans against Germany. -
Sussex Pledge Made
Germany made a promise that the U-boats would warn ships before firing or attacking. -
Zimmerman Note
In January of 1917 the British intercepted a telegraph from Germany intended for Mexico offering U.S. land once the war was won by the Germans if Mexico helped in their war effort. The intercepted telegraph was given to the U.S and upset Americans that if the Central Powers won the war America could be taken over and destroyed. This was one reason America entered the war. -
Sussex pledge ended
Once the Germans relized America could no longer be considered nuetral because they were giving Britian supplys and money they ended Sussex Pledge. The Germans felt they were not breaking the Pledge but only fighting back against the U.S. American ships were then armed for their voyages. -
American ships begin to be targeted
During March of 1917 three American ships were sank by Germans and this was the last straw to be pulled for the U.S president. -
