    13th Amendment Abolishes Slavery
    (13th Amendment) When this amendment passed congress in 1865, slavery was abolished, or, outlawed in the United States.

    (A Klu Klux Klan rally in Maryland) In the end of 1885, six veterans with confederate beliefs started a white supremacist group called the Klu Klux Klan, or KKK. This group was violent towards many types of people, infamous for killing African Americans.

    14th Amendment makes African American citizenship legal
    (14th Amendment) When Amendment 14 was ratified, it was legal for any person who was naturalized to the country or who was born in the country to become a citizen. This was a huge change which heavily affected African Americans and their future, for now they not only weren't slaves, they could also become legal citizens.

    (Handbill made to bring African Americans to Kansas) Some 20,000 African Americans nicknamed "exodusters" migrated to Kansas in the year 1879, which was the first big migration of African Americans, during the Great Migration. They were called exodusters because of the "exodus" that occured in 1879.

    Plessy Vs. Ferguson brings the "seperate but equal" laws in
    (Separate waiting rooms based on color.) A black man was jailed in 1892 for sitting on the "White Car" on the train. This case was raised all the way up to the attention of the supreme court. It took four years to close the case, and for the "seperate but equal laws" to be put into place, which gave African Americans seperate places to use the restroom, ride the bus, etc, but equal conditions.

    (Mob Outside Wilmington, N.C. Courthouse) In Willmington, North Carolina, a race riot occorued in 1898 due to a white supremacist attacking African Americans. This was at the state's largest metropolis, and it was one of the first of the mass riots that occured after the reconstruction.

    African American population in Harlem, New York  hits 50,000
    (African American Community in Harlem) WWI pushed many African Americans to migrate, and in the year 1914 the African American population in Harlem reached 50,000. This was a very momentous occasion for the migration and for America in general, because it was new for America to view African Americans as people and not just slaves.
