    Nick Carraway, Daisy's cousin, moves in the West Egg next to Gatsby. He starts meeting often Daisy and Tom, her husband. At the same time he has a relationship with Jordan Baker, with whom he goes to one of Gatsby's parties. Here they finally meet Gatsby in person.

    It's been decided by Gatsby that during the lunch Daisy will tell Tom what she feels and she has always felt: that she has never loved him. While the tension grows more and more all the characters go to the citytogether, in the effort to find a more "breathable air".

    But the excitement, discomfort, and concern only grow. Tom by now has understood everything, he came to know that his mistress is going to move far away with her husband and he feels like he is losing everything. At the same time Daisy is getting extremely anxious and feels a lot of pressure. Gatsby is pushing her and he feels that something isn't going how it was supposed to as well.

    He wants Daisy to admit she's never loved Tom but that, instead, she has always loved him. When Daisy is unable to do this, Gatsby declares that Daisy is going to leave Tom. Tom, though, understands Daisy far better than Gatsby does and knows she won't leave him: His wealth and power, matured through generations of privilege, will triumph over Gatsby's newly found wealth. In a gesture of authority, Tom orders Daisy and Gatsby to head home in Gatsby's car. Tom, Nick, and Jordan follow.

    While driving with Gatsby on the side, Daisy (who is still overwhelmed), hits and kills Myrtle, Tom's mistress. They run away and Tom and Nick, who are following in different cars, find out right after. Nick will find out just after, from Gatsby, that even if the car is Jay's he was not driving but he will take the falt for Daisy.

    Myrtle's husband kills Gatsby believing he killed his woman.

    Nick is left to help make arrangements for his burial. What is most perplexing, though, is that no one seems overly concerned with Gatsby's death. Daisy and Tom mysteriously leave on a trip and all the people who so eagerly attended his parties, drinking his liquor and eating his food, refuse to become involved.
