Invention of the Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1794. The cotton gin is a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. -
Embargo Act of 1807
The Embargo Act was enacted by the United States Congress against Great Britain and France during the wars. It was imposed in response to violations of U.S. neutrality. -

The Corrupt Bargain
Neither canidate won enough eletcral votes to become president so the vote went to the House of Representatives. Adams won and made Clay his secretary of state, enraging Americans who cried out against "corrupt bargain." -
Tariff of Abominations
The major goal of the tariff was to protect industries in the northern United States which were being driven out of business by low-price imported goods by taxing them. -
Indian Removal
Allowed the army to relocate Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River. The act violated a Supreme Court decision that recognized Indian lands. -
The Compromise of 1850
5 seperate bills passed in the United States which caused a four year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North. -
Fugitive Slave Act
It was part of the compromise of 1850. Encouraged slave owners to pursue run away slaves in the north. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom was a suffering black slave. Mr. Shelby trades Tom and Eliza's son. Eliza runs away with her sun. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The act was designed by Stephen A. Douglas. The purpose was to open up many farms. -
Bleeding Kansas
Confrontations in the US involving anti-slavery and pro-slavery. Took place in the Kansas Territory and towns in Missouri. -
Creation of the Republican Party
The party's purpose was to restrict slavery from all territories. The south took this as a declaration of war. -
Dred Scott Case
The Court held that African Americans could not be American citizens and had no standing to sue in federal court.Dred Scott attempted to sue for his freedom. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown attempted a slave revolt in 1859 by seizing a US arsenal at Harper's Ferry. -
