George Washington became the first president of the United States
George Washington was chosen as the First President of the United States. He served two four year terms, and his Vice President was John Adams. George Washington also chose the Heads of Department which consisted of Alexander Hamilton as secretary of treasury and Thomas Jefferson as secretary of state. Three French agents representing France's foreign minister demanded that the US diplomats pay a $250,000 bribe. The French agents also wanted the US to apologize publicly for anti-French remarks that Adams had made. In addition the agents insisted the US grant France a multimillion dollar loan. -

The Election of 1800
The Republicans(Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr) against Federalists(John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney) the campaign was harsh. Jefferson and Burr won each receiving 73 electoral votes. The tie caused a problem, because at the time voters could not vote separately for president and vice president. It was therefore up to the House to break the tie. The house voted over 30 times before Jefferson became president in 1801. -

The states ratified the twelve amendment in 1804. This amendment created a separate ballot for president and vice president . The election of 1800 showed that the country could transfer power peacefully between rival parties. It was also called the Revolution of 1800. -

When he was a general he defeated Creek Indian forces at Horshoe Ben. He defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans. The British and the US ended the war by signing the Treaty of Ghent. Politics parties started holding nomination conventions. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, which allowed the removal of American Indians. He easily won his second term as president against Martin Van Buren.
