Proclamation of Neutrality
During this time period, George Washington was our president. He signed a Proclamation of Neutrality so no one in the U.S. would get involved with the war between France and Great Britain. The relationship between the French and U.S. wasn't as it was before. This also caused Great Britain to take U.S. soldiers and force them to be in there navy. This all caused the war of 1812. Alien and Sedation Acts
During this time, John Adams was our President. Three laws had been created in preparation for the war against France. The Naturalization Act which made aliens ask for citizenship 5 years before it was granted. The Sedition Act which banned bad things being written about the government. States went against this and made laws since they thought it was taking away there freedom.

War with Tripoli
Thomas Jefferson was our President. Tripoli had required money from the U.S. when they cross the Mediterranean but one day Tripoli wanted more money but Jefferson refused to pay it. This caused a 4 year naval war. A peace treaty was signed in June. Jefferson then increased our navy size.

The Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson was our President at this time. The land west of the Mississippi river that the French owned became part of the U.S. Jefferson ended up doubling our land for only $15 million. Jefferson sent Louis and Clark out for the expedition and we discovered up to the pacific ocean.

War of 1812
James Madison was our President. British had been making U.S. Sailors join their navy. Madison declared war on Britain. The U.S. decided to try and take over Canada which belonged to Britain. It didn't work. The Native Americans stopped supporting Britain. In August, 1814 British burned down the White House. This all made the U.S. more independent for Europe.

Monroe Doctrine
James Monroe was our president. He issued the Monroe Doctrine which basically warned foreign states that if they interfered with affairs, they could expect a strong response in return. This helped shape the U.S.'s foreign affairs.

Tariff of Abominations
John Quincy Adams was our President. The taxes made to protect Northern factories had made foreign foods more expensive to buy. What ended up happening was that the South had to pay more for the manufactured goods and lost money for their raw materials. Fewer goods were bought from other countries from the south.

Trail of Tears
Andrew Jackson was our President. White Settlers and Real Estate Speculators led Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to seize farmland. An "Indian Removal Act" took place. We ended up loosing over 4,000 Cherokees. Also, the Warrior Chief who had helped Andrew Jackson.
