  • World Anti-Slavery Convention

    Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton attended this convention with their husbands. The commitee at the convention deemed women as "constitutionally unfit for public and business meetings." This would lead to a heated debate on the role of women and Mott and Staton were eventually forced into a segregated womens area. The two women sparked the idea of having their ownconvention in which the rights of women were addressed. This convention would later be know as the Seneca Falls Convention

  • Married Women's Property Act Passed

    This Act allowed women to have control over property and have their own property protected from their husbands
  • Seneca Falls Convention

    Seneca Falls Convention
    This was the first womens rights convention in history. 300 people attended the convention with only 30 being men. At this convention the Declaration of Sentiments (Modelled closely after The Declaration of Independance) was read by Elizebeth Cady Staton which described the "injuries and usurpations" that men had inflicted upon women and demanded that women be granted the rights that men had including the right to vote. Out of the 300 people that attended, only 100 signed the document.
  • American Equal Rights Association Founded

    Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, along with other feminists founded this association. The AERA worked with coloured people to achieve equal rights to all Americans.
  • 14th Amendment

    The American constitution explicitly protected the political voting rights to only "male inhabitants" of the United States. For the first time in history, the voting rights were only specified for one gender.
  • National Womens Sufferage Association was founded

    Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony founded this association as a response to the 14th Amendment and to campaign for female voting rights
  • Susan B Anthony Arrested

    Susan B Anthony was arrested for Illegally voting during the 1872 presidential election. During her trial, she had an all male jury and she was not permitted to speak during the trial. Although the trial as virtually rigged and Susan B Anthony lost the case resulting in a $100 fine (Which she refused to pay), Susan B Anthony gained major publicity and inspired many women to fight for their voting rights
  • Minor v. Happersett

    On October 15, 1872,Virginia Minor attempted to register to vote but was turned down as the Missouri constitution read that "Every male citizen of the United States shall be entitled to vote.". In return Minor sued the state court but lost the cae as "neither constitution or admendment made all (United States) citizens voters". This would stop feminists from trying to achieve their voting rights with the existing constitutions and amendments

    Congressional Union for Womens Suffrage/National Womens Party Founded

    Alice Paul and Lucy Burns (Both women were a part of the National Womens Sufferage Association), formed their own political party which was originally the Congressional Union for Womens Sufferage. Much like the NWSA this party fought for equal rights.Unlike the NWSA, The Congressional Union would adopt more militant methods in fighting for rights in ways such as protesting. Over time the Congressional Union for Womens Sufferage would be renamed to the National Womens Party.
  • The Silent Sentinels

    The Silent Sentinels
    As part of the National Womens party, Alice Paul sent protesters known as "Silent Sentinels" to the White House gates in an attempt to pressure United States President Woodrow Wilson into supporting womens sufferage. The protesters remained silent during their protests but carried confronational slogans to get their message across. Women would protest every day outside the White House except for Sunday and many women would be arrested for protesting

    19th Amendment Ratification

    On 21st of May 1919, The 19th Amendement was passed through the House of Representitives and went to the Senate. The 19th amendement was passed through the Senate and it sent to the states for legistation. By the 20th of August 1920, Tennessee passed the amendment making it the 36th state to ratify. This allowed the 19th amendement to be adopted by the American Constitution which gave women the right to vote.
  • Equal Rights Amendment drafted

    Alice Paul drafted the Equal Rights Amendment which contained the line " Men and women shall have equal rights throughout the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction." The draft was introduced in Senate but didnt reach the House of Representation until 1971
  • The Feminine Mystique

    Betty Friedan published the "The Feminine Mystique" which talks about the suppression and diffculties of being a woman with little rights. The book encouraged women to reach their full potential as human beings and is widely credited for sparking the second Feminist wave.
  • Equal Pay Act

    John F Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law giving women an equal salary to a man.

    Equal Employment Opportunity Commition - Title VII

    The EEOC was signed into the civil rights act in 1964 by John F Kennedy,prohibiting any discrimation in the workplace on the basis of race, gender, colour, national origin, or religion. On the 2nd of July,1965 the EECO began operations.
  • Miss America Protest

    Feminists gathered on the Atalantic City boardwalk and protested. At this time Feminists felt as though women were treated like cattle and had little significance in society other than to look pretty. Feminists set up trash cans called "Freedom cans" in which women would place items that idetify with being a women (such as bras , heels, etc) and burn them as a sign of independance from men
  • Equal Rights Amendment Passes Congress

    The Equal Rights Amendment was revised to have the phrase "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.". The amendment propsed the idea that women should have equal to men is all aspects.
  • Title XI

    The United States Congress impletemented Educational Amendment which included Title XI which read "no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." This allowed girls and boys to be an on equal level in terms of education.

    Allowed women to choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without legal restriction
  • Equal Rights Amendment Fails

    The ERA failed to meet the deadline with only 35 states ratifying the amendment. The amendment was only 3 states off from being avalible for the constitution.
