1. Hazel goes to a CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
Hazel is the main character in the book, and she was diagnosed with lung cancer which made her struggle with breathing. The side effects of lung cancer was depression. Hazel was very depressed, lonely and did not want to go anywhere or do anything. She was literally waiting for the day she was going to die. Her mother forced her to go to the cancer support group in the church. The only reason she went was to not disappoint her parents. -
2. HAZEL MEETS AUGUST
When she was in the church, she met Augustus. Augustus went with his friend Isaac. They were both diagnosed with cancer, Augustus was diagnosed in his bones and Isaac was diagnosed in his eyes. When the support group lesson began, Augustus could not stop staring at Hazel. When the lesson was done, she waited outside on her mother to pick her up. -
2. HAZEL MEETS AUGUST, continuation
Augustus followed Hazel. After a while, Augustus took up a cigarette and took it between his teeth. Hazel could not believe her eyes and confronted him, since she is diagnosed with lung cancer. He told her that it was a metaphor; “you take what kills you, but never give it the power to kill you”. He asked her if she wanted to go to his house for a movie, and she said yes. -
3. HAZEL GOES HOME TO AUGUSTUS
They watched a cute movie together and got to know each other better. They started talking about books, and they recommended books to each other. Hazel recommended her all time favorite book “An Imperial Affliction”. -
4. THEY READ EACH OTHERS BOOK
Augustus got very curious about the end of the story, and so was Hazel. Since the book ended in a cliffhanger, in the middle of a sentence. The author of the book was Peter Van Houten, and he was from Amsterdam. He never wrote anything more than the book. -
5. CONTACTING PETER VAN HOUTEN
Hazel and Augustus’ relationship got better and better, for each day that passed. They were always together, and spoke in the phone many times. Hazel told Augustus that she had tried to contact the author of the book several times, but did not get any answers back from him. Augustus found an email that was replied by Van Houten’s assistant. He gave Hazel the email address and they sent an email. -
6. THE REPLY
After a few days, Peter Van Houten’s assistant answered and said that the ending was too privat, it was a secret. The only way for Hazel and Augustus to know the ending was to travel to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. -
7. THE WISH
They wanted to travel to Amsterdam, but where was the money? Everyone that is diagnosed with cancer gets one wish. Hazel had already used her wish on a trip to Disneyland, but Augustus had not used his yet. So he decided to use it on the trip to Amsterdam. -
8. HAZEL’S ATTACK
Before they travelled, Hazel got very sick. She could not breathe. Her parents took her to the hospital, and the doctors got very upset about her. They were not sure if she could go, but somehow they let her go. It was her dream before she died. Augustus was very afraid for her. He waited on her when she came and gave her flowers. -
9. THE TRIP TO AMSTERDAM
They went with Hazel’s mother. Augustus had never flown before and he was very afraid, but Hazel helped him through the trip. The wish payed for all expenses of the trip. They went to Peter Van Houten, but he was an alcoholic man. He was very rude, and did not tell them anything. Hazel got heartbroken, and went out. -
10. AN INLOVE COUPLE
Later that day, they went out on a date to an expensive restaurant. Hazel wore a beautiful blue dress, Augustus could not get his eyes of her. Augustus on the other hand was wearing his suit that was picked out for his funeral when he was sick, everybody thought he was going to die. They had a great time together, and they confessed their love for eachother. What a beautiful couple they became. -
11. HEARTBREAKING NEW
There is a fact that the trip made Hazel and Augustus much closer, they were interdependent. On their last day, Augustus asked Hazel if they could talk. They went out to a bench and sat there before Augustus came with the heartbreaking new, he was dying. His cancer was rediscovered and it got worse from day to day. He was told that he had not much left from his life. Hazel could not believe her eyes, and decided to spend every second with him. The trip was over and they were returning back home. -
12. BACK HOME, AND AUGUSTUS GOT VERY SICK
Augustus was okay when he got back home. After that he did get to a point where he could not eat food without getting sick. He enjoyed his few months he got left with Hazel. One day Hazel got a call from Augustus at 2 am, he was in trouble. And did not want to ask anyone to help him. His G-tube who was originally installed in his body above his belly button to help him eat, came out. Hazel called 911 immediately. He got picked up by an ambulance. -
13. THE LAST GOOD AND SAD MEMORY
Hazel met Augustus and Isaac in the church, to have a prefuneral for Augustus. They read their speeches and cried a lot. (That was the most touching scene in the book). In this church, Hazel and Augustus first met. The rest was history. -
14. AUGUSTUS’ DEATH
8 days after the pre funeral, the day Hazel was afraid came; her love of her life’s death. Augustus Waters cancer beat his heart at 3:30 am. Everybody was devastated. Hazel cried herself to sleep everyday. -
15. THE REAL FUNERAL
Everybody spoke at his funeral, now it was Hazel’s turn. It was very hard for her, but she pushed through her hurt and spoke. Peter Van Houten came on his funeral. Hazel got very offended and mad. He pushed himself in her car and tried to explain himself. She did not want to hear a single word from him and threw him out. What he tried to explain to her was because a letter he received from Augustus. In this letter, Augustus asked Peter to attend his funeral. -
16. THE ENDING OF THE STORY
Once Isaac and Hazel were sitting outside and talking, then Isaac told her that Augustus was writing a letter weeks before he died. She looked for it everywhere but could not notice where it was. Then she realized that it was the letter Peter Van Houten spoke about. She got the letter and read it. This is how this beautiful story ends.
