Hazel goes to support group

Hazel, the main character who has cancer goes to support group, since her mom makes her go. Because her mother worries about Hazel being depressed, since Hazel spends most of her time inside alone watching TV.

Hazel meets Augustus

In support group, Hazel meets her friend Isaac`s friend, Augustus. In the meeting he start by staring at her the whole time and afterward when she confronts him with it, he ends up inviting her to watch a movie at his house and she accepts.

Hazel and Augustus talk about books

When Hazel is at Augustus house, she shares her favorite book "An Imperial Affliction" with Augustus and he shares his favorite book "The price of dawn" with her. They both agree to read each others books and meet after that.

Augustus reads an imperial Affliction

Augustus reads "An Imperial Affliction" and he also calls Hazel during, wanting to know how it ends, but she does not tell him. In the end of the book there are a lot of cliffhangers, because the book ends in the middel of a sentence, since it is symbol of how Anna, the main character of the book, dies of cancer. When he is finished reading it, he is calling Hazel, who tells him that no one knows how it ends. The book does also becomes something special for Augustus and Hazels relationship.

Hazel and Augustus e-mail Peter Van Houten

After Hazel tells August that she have tried contacting the author, Peter Van Houten, but that she has not succeeded. August tries therefore to e-mail his assistant and gets a response. He tells this to Hazel and she writes an e-mail to his assistant and asks how the book ends.

Hazel gets a respons from his assistent, Lidewij. She tells that he would love to tell her more about the book, but he can not do it over the phone or by e-mail, because his afraid she would publish some of it as her own. Therefore the only possibility is for her to come to Amsterdam and they can discuss it over there, at his place.

Augustus task Hazel out on a picnic

Augustus takes Hazel out on a picnic in a sculpture park. He starts by giving her orange tulips and at the picnic he has made dutch sandwiches. At the picnic he tells her that he has used his wish at wish granting organization for children with cancer, to go to Amsterdam with Hazel and meet Peter Van Houten.

Hazel gets sick

Hazel has a headache that ends up with her going to the hospital, because of her extreme pain. The doctors find out that her lungs are filled with fluid resulting to less oxygen to her brain causing her the headache.
She stays some days under observation at the hospital. After some discussion with her doctors she still gets to go to Amsterdam.

They fly to Amsterdam

On the flight to Amsterdam Hazel and Augustus watch movies and shares their favorites poems. Augustus also tells Hazel that he loves her. Hazel mom is also traveling with them.

They eat at fancy restaurant

After they arrive at the hotel and rest for a while, Augustus and Hazel dress up and goes out to eat at a fancy restaurant called Oranjee. At the restaurant they are talking about the river and the boats around them and the people around. They also drinks champaign for the first time and they talk about how it tastes like stars.

They go to meet Peter Van Houten

The day after they arrived, they go to meet Peter Van Houten at his apartment. Hazel is very excited and she dresses up as the main character from the book. When they get to his house and meet him, he starts by acting rude towards them and he is also drinking, even though it is in the morning. He is avoiding Hazels questions about the end of the book and keeps on being rude the whole time they are there. It ends up with his assistant quitting and she takes them with her.

They go to the Anne Frank museum

The assistant feeling bad after the incident with Peter Van Houten, she takes them to the Anne Frank museum. In the museum there is a lot of stairs and it is challenging for Hazel getting around with her bad lungs, but she manage to get to the top stairs. Afterwards as she gets down, she and Augustus shares their first kiss, it also gathers a crowd around them and they clap at the end of their kiss.

Before they leave Amsterdam Hazel and Augustus are sitting at cafe talking when she notices something is wrong with him. They go back to the hotel and Augustus tells her that he has taken a PET scan and that his cancer is back and it is only getting worse.

They go home

They all fly home. On the flight Augustus and Hazel drink champaign who reminds them of their night in Amsterdam and the stars.

Augustus dies

When they come home from Amsterdam, Augustus is only getting more and more sick. He can stay home for while, both Hazel and Isaac are visiting him and supporting him together with his family. After a while he ends up staying at the hospital. But Augustus throws himself a funeral at the church where they normally are holding the support meetings. He invites Isaac and Hazel, each of them holds an eulogy for him as a closer. One morning Hazel wakes up with a message on her phone that he has passed.

Hazel receives a letter

After Augustus funeral, Hazel finds out from Isaac that Augustus has written her a letter. She looks for it everywhere and she ends up asking Ledwij if she knows if Peter Van Houten has received anything from Augustus. She respondes with that she will ask him. The day after Hazel gets an e-mail from her with Augustus letter where he askes if Peter Van Houten can write an eulogy for her.
