Moscow
Website Gorbachev is on the edge of signing a deal to the republics, giving them freedom. The plotters make their move. Some of Gorbachev's closest and most senior colleagues are among them, and with military chiefs and the head of the KGB. Tanks come into Moscow and locate in strategic positions. The day before the coup, the plotters travelled to ask him to declare a state of emergency. He refuses and they put him on house arrest until the coup collapses. -
