The Soviet Union was no more and many, many people all around the world celebrated this.

It also symbolized the line or border between communism and democracy and the struggle for power between the two. The living conditions in West Germany and East Germany were completely different. West Germany became the “economic miracle” and East Germany became an extremely Communist society.

He spoke with President Mikhail Gorbachev gave him ideas with how to push democracy in his nation. President Reagan got out of office in January and the USSR fell in December.

He was a very popular choice because he was young and he desired a change for the Soviet Union. Also, Gorbachev introduced a wide ranging program of reform. His major reforms were glasnost, perestroika and democratization. These reforms allowed the problems of the USSR to be uncovered and become public knowledge. Gorbachev was in office for general secretary of the USSR until August 24, 1991.

Boris Yeltsin, just like Mikhail Gorbachev, believed in change. He began sacking officials and axe privileges that party stalwarts have enjoyed for many years. And in July 1990, Boris Yeltsin publicly resigned from the Communist party.

A communist newspaper called Sovetskaya Rossiya tells all of its readers to not follow Gorbachev's reforms. But through these hardships, Gorbachev still carries on with Perestroika.

The live television broadcasts of parliament were so popular, they had to stop showing them on television because millions and millions of workers had stopped working in order to watch.

THe Nobel Peace Prize comitee said that he won the award for, "his leading role in the peace process". President Bush of the United States congratulated Gorbachev for having brought, "historically significant change, both political and economic, to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe".
