In a short time after its founding, Pinkerton's agency would grow into one of the largest of its time. The railroads helped build his reputation across the country. -
Hired by the feds
In 1871, Pinkerton's agency was hired by the DOJ in order to track interstate criminals, effectively turning the agency into a law enforcement agency. -
ADT is founded
ADT Founder Edward Callahan created a telegraph-based "call-box" to signal for assistance to a central office. He quickly connected 50 other homes in the neighborhood, creating the first residential security system network. -
Anti-Pinkerton Act
In 1893 this law went into effect which forbid the federal government from contracting private agencies fro a number of jobs. This brought an end to the agency's time working with the government. -
California moves to legislate-more
With private firms seeing such amazing growth, lawmakers began to realize the threat of the business. From this point onward, private security had to be licensed. -
Regulations continue
From the 1900's onward, private security saw major advances in the field of new technology. This was kept in check by increasing government regulation. -

With the advent of Computer technology, the private security industry saw itself take on the new threat of cyber security. -
9/11
The attacks on the twin towers and the pentagon left the nation screaming for tighter security regarding such things as planes, trains and other potentially destructive infrastuctrue. -
Modern Day
Privatized security used to be a luxury asset that only the rich could buy. But as with all things, it's development over the years made it more accessible to the point where people now expect it to be provided for free, or only cost them their rights.
