A New Organization: Good things ahead?
The North Atlantic Trade Organization was created in 1949 April 4. Th prime reason for creation was response to the soviet expansion. If they attacked (SU) then the western europe wouldn’t be able to withstand an attack. The original members:
USA, UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and, Portugal, Main pnt: any attack made by one of them --> all will help out (whatever is deemed necessary”) -
Greece and Turkey join NATO for better or worse
This meant that these two european states would be protected and governed by laws of NATO. By including these two states it would mean that NATO could be extended eastward in the mediterranean. This strengthens international relationships and expands their homebases. -
NATO forming friendships with the Federual Repbulic of Germany?
Took place during both east and west conflcit. Was important for post war rehabliitation and allowed Germany to play a role in the defence of westernn europe during the cold war. Both moneywise and defensive. Federal rebublic = formed 1949. Other coutnties were unwilling to have Germany be part of the group. (France) -
Disagreement over Suez crisis leads NATO to develop its political role
Left NATO after he crius and because they felt pressuered. At first held the pressure off and then finallly lost the battle and was forces them to fold under the pressure. -
France Runs Away
France felt suffocated by Britian and the US and the people wanted more indepence. France started with the military forces that were in France and that France took part of. In 1959 the mediterrian fleet removed. Publicly France said it was because they were concerned about nuclear wepons. They were still able to partake in NATO because it is also poltical. -
NATO turns a blind eye to killings
Soviet union, Bulgaria, Hungary, east Germany, and Poland invaded Czechoslovak socialist republic in order to halt dubceks Prague spring political liberalism reforms. The outcome was successful and the liberlaistation was stopped. During this time over 600 people were killed. In response to this horrific crime NATO turned a blind eye towards what was happing. -
Rebuilding and reaffirming
Within this resigning by NATO and the nations within it they are reaffirming their vows from the first siging of the treaty. Included in this would be general rule of military fighing, ecomnic standings, and the US standings in NATO. This would reaffirim what orginal claimed that they could do such as; protecting nations withing the group and working towards defending againts futher attacks. -
Spain joins NATO
NATO —> welcomed the impending membership of spain saying it offered them enduring validity
Spain thought they would make a good contribution to NATO’s military Would not allow nuclear weapons to be used or stored in its territory. -
NATO launches the Partnership for Peace programme
Programme of practicial bilateral copperation between indidual europ-alantic partner countries and NATO. Allows partners to build an indivual relationship with NATO chossing their own prioriites for cooperation.Partnerships for peace to increacse stablity, dimishish threats to peace and build strenght sectiry realashionships between indicudal europ-alantic parterners and NATO. -
NATO a century later
During this time NATO was renewing their vows and promises that they made over a centruy ago. Some of the basic promises within this delcration were refering to Some fo these were reenstaing the very reasons NATO fomred, to help protect and denfend againts any and all attacks.
