The Phonograph
Thomas Edison's invention. This was the very first way of listening music and also the very first way of recording music. This would all save on wat looked like a cylinder. -
Gramophone
Invented Emile Berliner. This was the first system that recorded and played music on a flat disc. Had an arm that would scratch the discs to play the music. -
Telegraphone
Valdimar Poulsen invented the wire recorder. This recorded the music onto a wire and worked similarly to the magnetic recorder. -
Records
The record was the first sound recording that could be mass produced in 1900. They were originaly made of glass, then zinc and eventually plastic. -
Magnetic Recorder
Fritz Pfleumer invented this. It was primarely used for recording music. It was based on the invention of magnetic wire recording. -
LP (long playing records)
LPs are albums which were known as long playin records at the time. -
multi-track analog tape
Ideas and testing of this was actually developed during the 1940's by Les Paul but wasnt actually finished and published untl 1962. -
Cassette Tapes
Phillips develops a compact stereo cassette tape and player. The cassette tape became the most popular form of music media for several years. -
Compact CD's
The first CD released was Billy Joel's "52nd Street". One year later, in 1983, CDs were released in the USA. -
Ipod
Apple created the ipod which was the biggest hit in music media. -
Itunes
This was big because it was made so you can link you apple ipods to it and get music. -
iPod touch
The iPod touch was reat because instead of using a computer, you could directly surf the web and also download music right on your device.
