The Evolution of Media in the Philippines

    Pre-Colonial Period
    A writing system called baybayin, also known as Unicode, was developed during the pre-colonial period in the Philippines that was derived from the Brahmic scripts in India. In addition, town criers of the ancient barangays in the country called the Umalokohans were the ones who go around the barangays or small towns to disseminate information for the people to become aware of the new laws and policies. But to some historians, Umalohokans were the ones who acted as judges to settle arguments.

    During this period, newspapers,books, and magazines became widespread in the country. Newspapers like Del Superior Govierno, that was intended for Spaniards and La Solidaridad, for the Filipino revolutionaries. The Manila Times and Manila Bulletin, both of which were during the American period. Books written by Jose Rizal, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, that criticized the Spanish Rule. Magazines like the Liwayway Magazine, which was the most notable magazine in the early 1900s.

    Broadcast Industry
    The introduction of the telegraph and telephone system in the country led to a new industry called the broadcast industry. The first telephone system of the country operated during 1890. The radio was first introduced by Henry Herman in a small radio station that led to Filipinos making radios as a fixture in their homes. Also, televisions became known because of an American engineer named James Lindenberg. This industry is useful until now since it is a form of mass media.

    This period started when Carlos Naquera, a Spanish soldier, brought several short films in 1897. Filipinos loved films that they created their own. The first Filipino film was Dalagang Bukid, produced by Jose Nepomuceno in 1919. Films were also used as propaganda by Japanese Colonizers. Fortunately, the film industry was able to rise which led to the emergence of the "Golden Age of Philippine Cinema".

    On March 1994, Philippines became officially connected to the world of Internet. The first commercial Internet service provider was launched Mosaic Communications or MosCom. In 2011, the Philippines became the "social media capital of the world".

    Today, people consider that the world is your audience. One who posts something online will be liable to be seen, read, watched and heard from anywhere in the world. Smartphones became famous in this period that almost everyone has one. All the different forms of media in the past became better due to the advancement of technology.
