First African American Newspaper
Freedom's Journal was the first black owned operated newspaper in the U.S. It's purpose was to counter racist commentary published my the mainstream press. This newspaper was important because it showed the representation in the media community, and made it culturally diverse. The journal provided it's readers with regional, national, and international news that both entertains and educates. -
First Telephone Invented
Alexander Graham Bell invented the first telephone when he was only 12 years old. His invention revolutionized communication. By 1877 he created the Bell Telephone Company, which is now known as AT&T. After Bell announced what he did there was controversy because other inventors and scientists claimed they had also come up with the same idea. Once the first telephone was made the idea took off and we now have IPhones that basically manage our whole lives. -
Invention of Photographic Film
Photographic film was created by George Eastman. He started manufacturing paper film in 1885, but eventually switched to celluloid in 1885. This was a very important event because it was used in cameras for recording images. Though it only made an image in black and white, it was still revolutionary because it led to the development of colour films and now the camera app on our phones. -
Invention of the Radio
Guglielmo Marconi sent and received his first radio signal in Italy at 20 years old. It was the first wireless telegraph, which ended up winning him the Nobel Prize for physics. However, even if it is nothing like the public radio broadcasting we have now, it still was the building blocks to what we use now. -
National Geographic Photographs
Gilbert Grosvener was the very first full-time editor and the president of National Geographic. The pictures that we see in this magazine to this day are iconic. We have all seen them whether it is being used in a lesson at school ,or if we get our monthly subscriptions to the magazine. Grsovener transformed the magazine from a tiny 900 readers to now over 2,000,000. The magazine was also important because now this company has a magazine, website, and it's own T.V channel! -
Film and Radio become popular
Throughout the 1920's, film and radio became popular around the world. It made a big impact because now we basically categorize movies from different decades and now we enjoy the "oldies". The start of film and radio being popular has carried on and evolved. It was basically the start of a never ending era hopefully. -
Disney's First Full-Colour Movie
Disney's first full cover movie was an animated short film called Flowers and Trees. This was the beginning of process that led to the Disney movies that are still being released to this day that we love. This movie was what got Disney their start in the film industry. -
Walt Disney Produces First Animated Feature
The very first animated feature that Walt produced was Snow White and was released on the 21st of December in 1937. Even though snow White wasn't the first Disney Princess, she was the first full-length movie princess. Now we have a dozen Disney princess movies that all originated from this very first one. It was an important step in history because the Disney princesses are one of the most recognizable characters in the world. -
First Large Automatic Computer is Built
The first large automatic computer was built at Harvard which they called the Harvard Mark 1. It was conceived by a Harvard physics professor named Howard Aiken, but the computer was physically built and designed by IBM. Even though the computer was 51 feet long, it was still important because it was the beginning of the world of computers and laptops that we have access to now. -
CBS and NBC Begin First Newscasts
CBS and NBC began there first newscasts in 1947 and are still the most popular and running broadcasting channels today. NBC's first breakout hit was Texaco Start Theatre, which was a television version of a popular radio variety show. CBS also shifted from radio to television to expand their audience. The famous soap opera on network at the time, The Guiding Light, continued for 57 years before stopping in 2009. These networks because very recognized and important in the media arts world. -
Elvis Presley Receives First Gold Record
Elvis received his first Gold Record on March 23, 1956. the album he made is full of his early songs. He also hits #1 on the billboard charts for his album for 10 weeks in a row. It was a big time in media history because it was such a popular album and it received over $1 million in sales. It was very exciting and changed the music world as well. -
Rise of FM Radio
Throughout the 1960s FM radio became increasingly popular and loved. FM radio is super important especially now because without it we wouldn't have emergency broadcasting services, nor would the technology that make microwaves and other technology even exist. We take it for granted now because we think of it as just the music and new that we listen to int he car, but in the 60's it was life changing and revolutionary in the world and in media. -
Invention of the Internet
The invention of the internet was a long process that encountered many mishaps, like an unsuccessful satellite. When it was first developed, it was reserved for only university researchers, the military, and the U.S Government secret services. By the end of 1969 there were only 4 computers connected to the internet. Almost one-third of the worlds population uses the internet regularly. It really is a special and magnificent creation that gives us access to create amazing things online. -
Microsoft is Founded
Microsoft was founded on April 4th 1947 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in New Mexico. Microsoft is one of the platforms for media arts and the company now owns other companies like Xbox, and many other electronics and digital services. Microsoft is worth of $1 trillion which is an insane amount of revenue! They are a very successful company that plays a huge role in the media industry, worth so many different platforms. -
Colour Television Takes Over
In the 1980's colour television started to take over black and white T.V in American households. Colour T.V changed how Americans saw the world because you are basically seeing your favorite things and colour for the first time. We all know how watching the Saturday cartoons was a big thing when colour T.V came out. Colour T.V was a big step in the media world because it completely changes what you are use to seeing and it is like a whole new world. -
Amazon Launches Online Shopping
Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon which first opened for business as an online bookseller. After one year of selling the company has already made $15.7 million in revenue. Now, the company is worth more than $1.7 trillion. This company has mastered how to bring in people so they can make as much money as possible. With such a big platform, and the organization of their website, they are always influencing what is trending and the best things to buy. -
Release of TikTok
My final part in the evolution is the app TikTok which was released in September 2016 by creator Zhang Yiming. Musically was the original app that was remade into TikTok. It is the most popular app today, especially with teenagers who obsess over it daily. The app allows you to create short videos to show your talents whether it is singing, dancing, makeup, art, etc. It has made many trends that are all about media, and has gotten the younger generation interested in media arts as well!
