How Has Fashion Changed Over The Years?
Fashion has changed drastically over the past 80 years. Starting from the Gloomy beginning of World War II in the 1940's to the prosperous 2020's where climate change is a thing. -
Influenced Clothing in 1940's
Fashion trends of the 1940s were strongly influenced by WWII via government regulations & rationing. This was true for both The Allies (France, America, Britain, & The Soviet Union) & The Axis Powers (Japan, Italy, & Germany). -
Period: to
1940's Fashion
Fashion in the 1940's was stalled because of the second world war. Both men and women were often seen wearing uniforms but if not, their clothing styles were dictated by rationing and utility clothing. Although "fashion" in the 1940's was delayed due to the war, it still lasted for a little while in the 1950's. -
Influenced Clothing in 1950's
The end of the war also saw the return of couture fashion designers like Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, and Hubert de Givenchy who had a major impact in the style of the decade. -

1950's Fashion
Fashion in the 1950s saw a clear gender divide. While men and boy’s fashion moved towards a more casual day-to-day style, women and girl’s fashion prioritized elegance, formality, and perfectly matched accessories. Couture womenswear saw rapid change with new designers such as Cristobal Balenciaga and Hubert de Givenchy, disrupting the overtly feminine silhouette popularized by Christian Dior while novel prints and colors marked a playfulness in fashion for both men and women. -
Influenced Clothing in 1960's
The Beatniks and the Mods (an abbreviation of 'Modernists') were particularly influential early in the decade. Beatniks were members of a social movement in the mid-20th century, who subscribed to an anti-materialistic lifestyle. They rejected the conformity and consumerism of mainstream American culture and expressed themselves through various forms of art, such as literature, poetry, music, and painting. -

1960's Fashion
Fashion in the 1960s became progressively more casual across all genders and ages. Womenswear followed three broad trends: a continuation of the previous decade’s ladylike elegance, the youthful styles of Mary Quant and the Space Age influence, and the late 1960s “hippie” style. Menswear saw an increasing amount of color and pattern, military influence, and new fashion icons in the form of rock stars. Children’s wear saw less change, but also became more casual and bright in color and pattern. -
Influenced Clothing in 1970's
By the 1970s, it was New York's turn. Manhattan was home to a collection of designers who not only made fashion but also set the direction for it: Calvin Kelin, Ralph Lauren, Bill Blass, Stephen Burrows, Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and Anne Klein. -
Period: to
1970's Fashion
Seventies fashion saw bold colors and patterns take center stage. Women’s fashion looked back to the 1940s by day and pumped up the glamour by night. Men had an array of suit types to choose from and favored colorful plaids. Children’s fashion followed adult fashion with bold plaids and bright colors with the distinction between genders lessening throughout the decade. -
Influenced Clothing in 1980's
The media also heavily influenced fashion during this time. The styles seen in Miami Vice influenced many trends of the 1980s. Characters were frequently seen wearing t-shirts under pastel-coloured suits, helping popularize Italian dresswear in North America. -

1980's Fashion
In the 1980s, bigger meant better across the board in fashion. From women’s shoulder pads to men’s power suits to bold colors and patterns for men, women and children, there was nothing understated about fashion in the eighties. -
Influenced Clothing in 1990's
In addition, women wore overalls, swirl patterns, leopard print, scrunchies, bandanas, crop tops, tie-dye… The music and film industry with Destiny's child, The Spice Girls, Clueless, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Britney Spears… influenced these popular fashion trends of the 90s. -
Period: to
1990's Fashion
As the 20th century came to a close, fashion reached its most casual. Both men and women adopted grunge fashion in the early part of the decade and loose, oversized clothing and jeans became staples. As the decade progressed, women’s fashion became more streamlined as minimalism became de rigueur, while children’s clothing often featured popular Disney characters. -
Influenced Clothing in 2000's
In Africa, Europe, North America, East Asia, South America, and Oceania, the early 2000s saw the continuation of many mid and late 1990s fashions due to the continued influence of teen pop stars such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, such as the military look, while introducing newer more vaguely dystopian post. -

2000's Fashion
As the new decade and millennium dawned, fashion largely continued along the same trajectory that had started in the late 1990s. However, in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, fashion returned to conservatism. With the rise of new technology, fashion spread quickly and celebrities played a key role in consumer choices as images were shared through the internet instantly. While popular styles changed over the years, one item remained ubiquitous throughout the decade: denim jeans. -
Influenced Clothing in 2010's
2010s fashion includes pieces such as very long sleeve tops, bootcut jeans, and an overall more relaxed vibe compared to Y2K. The entire basis of Y2K was the Paris Hilton flashy pieces phase. However, 2010s were much more demure. On TikTok, this style is often referred to as the 2010s babysitter look. -

Due to the influence of artists like Ru Paul, Jodie Harsh and gay singer Sam Smith, drag queen-inspired outfits went mainstream. Influential designers included Harris Reed, JW Anderson, and Bode. Linear lines like stripes will probably be everywhere. Both horizontal and vertical will continue to be popular in 2020. In particular, vertical lines will be big because they look great in photos and ``flatter any body type.'' Leather will also make an appearance in just about every form of clothing. -
