The Phonograph
The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. He had become famous and he had been invited to the White House to show the President how it worked in 1878. -

Records were made out of glass and the gramophone was invented 10 years after the phonograph. -

Multitrack Recording Tapes
An analog tape recording began in recording studios. The idea of the multitrack had begun in the late 1940's by gutarist and inventor and composer Les Paul. An example of people who quickly made the change to multitrack tapes are The Beatles and The Beach Boys. -
Cassette Tapes
Phillips create a compact stereo cassette tape and player. The cassette tape became the top from of music midea for the next several years. In the 70s it became possible to record your own music off of records or radio onto a blank cassette. Around the same time in the 60s the portable cassette was released. -
Compact discs
The compact disc or CD was released in 1982 in Japan. The first CD release was Billy Joel's "52nd Street". One year later in 1983 CDs were released in the USA. It only took three years for the CD to overcome the LP. -
Napster
In 2000 Napster was released and it lets you easily share songs with eachother. The new program made the record dealers rates drop. Napster was later not avalibale anymore in 2001 -
Apple Ipod
