Jefferson Goes After Barbary Pirates in N. Africa.
American ships were falling prey to Barbary corsairs overseas. This angered many Americans, and Jefferson acted by waging war on the pirates. In this era, many North African leaders financed their countries with piracy. Most European victims of piracy were extorted of their money in exchange for being left alone by Pirates. However, Jefferson made a bold decision by attacking these pirates rather than giving in. -

Aaron Burr shoots Alexander Hamilton
On this day, Hamilton and Burr met to duel . However, Alexander Hamilton did not want to shoot Burr, so he shot his gun in the air. Burr still shot him anyway. :( This is significant because Alexander Hamilton, a founding father, was now dead. Also, it underlined the deep rivalries in politics and was a dark day for the political freedom of America (or lack thereof). Finally, the duel ended Burr's success in politics. -
War with the Barbary Pirates Ends
Thomas Jefferson's plan to fight off the pirates succeeded. The cost of war was about half of what it would have cost to pay annual tribute to the pirates. Also, it allowed the U.S. to prove itself as a competent naval power. This is significant because it allowed sailors in America to only be afraid of impressment by the British and French rather than being afraid of both impressment and piracy. Also, it proved to the world that the U.S. had a respectable navy and was not afraid of enemies. -

Treaty of Ghent
This day formally ended the War of 1812. It allowed the U.S. to keep the territory that it had before the war and ended impressment of American ships by Britain. This is significant because it showed the world that the U.S. could fight well. The war gave the U.S. an edge as an emerging naval power because of the sudden lack of impressment of American ships (I wonder why...) and it proved the U.S. navy as effective in combat. Last, the U.S. gained a lot of morale and nationalism from winning. -
