    James Monroe fought in the battle of Trenton when he was 18, and made a name for himself by serving twice as the governor of Virginia, and a senator of Virginia as well. He ran for the office of president against federalist Rufus King, and won with a large majority of electoral votes. And fortunately for him, he was elected at a time when the nation was at relative internal peace and prosperity.
