The Origins of Football
Early on football was used by college sophmores as apart of intiation rights for incoming freshmen. As for most other rites of passage, the game was ment to degrade the intiates as a condition for acceptence. Begining in 1827 sophmores at Harvard would subject the freshmen to a violent game. Most of these "games," resulted in blacke eyes, bloodied noses, sprained limbs, and shredded clothes. As early as 1840, Yale and other Ivy league schools took up this practice as well. -

The Alamo
During the tulmultous time period of relations between the U.S. and Mexico, General Santa Ana, bought his army into texas to reclaim what he belivesd was mexico's rightful possesion. However when he arrived at the Almo on Febuary 23, 1836 he was met by 200 well armed milita under the command of William B. Travis, who where determined to hold the Almo and protect Texas from this mexican invasion. And they did until March 6th, so the Almo is remembered as a sign of freedom for the state of Texas. -
End of U.S.- Mexican War (1846-1848)
The treaty of Guadalupe-Hildago ended the two year conflict between the U.S. and Mexico. Over the border and terrritorial rights of the two nations. In the end Mexico lost nearly half its territory and the U.S. gained the American southwest, form Texas to California. -
Start of the Civil War
On April 12th, 1861 confederate forces in South carolina attacked the union fort of Fort Sumter of the coast of charleston. This attack would lead to the civil war which would become the bloodiest war in our countries history. -
End of the Civil War
THe surrender of confederate general Robert E. Lee came at apomattox court house in Northern Virginia. His surrender would signal the end of the war and the preservation of the Union and the United States of America. -
President Abraham Lincoln is assinated
Six days after the surrender of Lee, Lincoln was watching a play at Ford's theatre when he was shot in the head by a famous actor and confederate loyalist John Wilkes Booth. He would later die from his wounds and became one of our most famous presidents in teh process. -
First Dynasty
Yale became a football powerhouse in the late nineteeth century. And from the years 1872 to 1909 the Yale football teams record stood at the unbeliveable record of 324 wins, 17 losses, and 18 ties. -
Emergence of American Football
During the 1870's two types of football began to distunguish themselves on college campuses. One, more similiar to association football (later to be known as soccer) a game in which players could only use their feet to progress the ball. THe other was more similar to rugby, and this game would evolve from a simple college game into a spectacle for the masses. -
Orginization of Football
IN 1876 student delagetes from Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Harvard founded the Intercollegiate Football Association. This organization standardized the rules of the game and introduced a championship game at the end of the season to encourage teams to emphasize winning. -
Father of Football
Walter Camp would be known later as Father of the game of football. Was instrumental in shapeing the college game early history. He was a part of the Yale squad from 1875-1882, then later rejoined as the yale team coach. Camp also was key in radical rule changes such as the three down system, a line of srimage, and tackling below the waist. -
The beginging of something special
By the early 1890's college sports especially football have become a show. More or less a specticale with social implications for not only the players but caochs, fans, and students alike. these teams became how one refrenced ones self by which school did you attend.
