The First Travellers
In 1606 the first European, Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon (1571–1639), visited the west. Luis Vaez de Torres sailed through the water between Australia and Papua New Guinea later that year. -
We Discover Tasmania
In 1642, Dutchman Abel Tasman, working for the Dutch East Indies Company reached Tasmania, which he called Antony van Diemenslandt. He then called the continent he charted the north coast of on his second visit in 1644 New Holland. -
The First Fleet
One of the ships was Alexander and it was a merchant ship launched at Hull in 1783 or 1784. She was one of the vessels in the First Fleet, that the British government hired to transport convicts for the European colonisation of Australia in 1788. -
Early years 1788-1850
The first settlement consisted of about 850 convicts, guards, and officers who were all led by Governor Arthur Phillip. The early years of the new colony, Sydney, was a rough and tough time. There wasn''t much food as the land was hard to grow food. -
Australian Explorers (1800-1900)
After the troubles and hardships of the early years, the administration was pushing to find out more about what lay beyond the shores and coastline of Australia. Explorers were encouraged by Governors to map out and find out what the central landscape of Australia was like. Many expeditions were made and great discoveries of new found land were mapped out.
