Many people used to wash there dishes in the sink with there soap and sponges, and most of the time they chipped there dishes. In 1850 Joel Houghton built a wooden dishwasher. It was made as a hand turned wheel to splash water on his dishes.It really didn't do a lot of work. (science and context) -
La Alexander's Dishwasher
In 1865 Alexander had the same idea as Joel Houghton. They both used a hand cranked wheel. Alexander used a gear to spin a rack so it would hold the dishes and it would spin in a wooden tube. There wasn't really a difference . source ( world book) -
