Smith presents "Ten Year Housing Plan"
In May of 1959, Newell J. Smith of the Division of Residence Halls drew up plans for the construction of the Southeast Residence halls. It was known as the "Ten Year Housing Plan". The 16 acres of land Smith plotted out would soon be home to Sellery Hall. -
Southeast plans presented, passed
On July 8, 1959, Smith and President Conrad Elvehjem presented the plans for the Southeast Residence Halls to the University of Wisconsin regents. -
Regents approve land purchase
In February of 1961, the regents approved the land purchase for the area where the Southeast Residence Halls would be built. The area purchased was 16 acres. -
Regents voted on plans for "Southeast Dormitory #1"
In May of 1961, the regents voted on the architectural plans for what would soon become Sellery Hall. At this time, it was referred to as "Southeast Dormitory #1". It was the first of the three dormitories to be designed and constructed. At this time, it was estimated to cost $6.8 million. -
Regents approve plans for Southeast Dormitory #1
On July 20, 1961, the regents approved the plans presented for Southeast Dormitory #1. The approved plans wound up costing a total of $4.3 million, significantly less than the original plans that would cost $6.8 million. -
Southeast dormitories named
On June 10, 1963, the regents voted on the names of the three new Southeast Residence Halls. At this time, "Southeast Dormitory #1" became George C. Sellery Hall. -
Sellery Hall welcomes residents
In the fall of 1963, Sellery Hall opened for the first time. It housed some 1,100 University of Wisconsin students. -
Sellery switches to mixed coed floors
In the fall of 2011, Sellery switched from coed floors dividing the wings of each tower by sex to mixed coed floors. In this set up, males and females were set up in rooms next to and across from the opposite sex. -
Sellery Hall renovations to take place
From 2018 to 2019, Sellery Hall will undergo renovations to its interior. The central building core, first floor and basement will be expanded, and new elevators, windows and air conditioning units will be added.
