  • Charles Beck introducing Jahn's gymnastic program. (national period)

    Charles Beck introduced Jahn's gymnastic program of exercise and apparatus to the students at Round Hill School in Northampton, Mass. Beck built am outdoor gymnasium and started the first school gymnastic program.
  • Catherine Beecher's and her strides for P.E.(national period)

    Catherine Beecher developed and implemented the a program of physical education within the educational curriculum of the school. The program consisted of calisthenics performed to music.
  • YMCA

    The first Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was opened in the United States. Due to the interest in gymnastics and other health promoting activities, the YMCAs add physical education after the Civil War.
  • Dioclesian Lewis development of the "Light System" (Civil War Period)

    Dioclesian Lewis developed the Lewis system of "light" gymnastics and introduced it to men, women, and children living in Boston. These were exercises meant to improve the cardiovascular system and were performed to music.
  • Thomas Woods Speech (early twentieth century)

    Thomas Wood presented his vision for a new physical education, one with an "aim as broad as education itself". He spoke at the International Conference of Physical Education.

    The first modern day Olympics were founded in Athens, Greece. The participants were a small group of American athletes, organized by William Sloane.
  • Clark Hetherington's philosophy on P.E.

    Clark Hetherington articulated the four object of physical education as organic development, psychomotor development, character development, and intellectual development. Hetherington believed P.E. had a broader purpose than the physical aspects of the individual.

    The teacher's College of Colombia University and New York University offered the first doctoral degrees in physical education. This led to other programs around the country doing this as well

    Jesse Williams advocated "educational through the physical". this emphasized his beliefs about the unity of the mind and body.
  • Great Depression and its affect on physical education.

    The stock market crash began the Great Depression, which affected education tremendously. Health and P.E. had a very difficult time surviving during these times in many communities.
  • Jesse Owens Heroics in 1936 Olympics

    Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics, hosted in Berlin, Germany. Adolf Hitler sought to use the games to promote Aryan racial superiority. Owen's winnings relay countered Hitler's efforts.

    The National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball was established for the purpose of providing an association for smaller colleges. The created this due to the physical education problems for smaller schools

    The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) was founded. Physical Educators, coaches, and others' stepped forward to fulfill the responsibilities working as athletic trainers.
  • Kraus-Weber Fitness Test

    The Journal of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation published an article called "Muscular Fitness and Health". The article reported the results of the Kraus-Weber Minimal Muscular Fitness Test given to European and American Children
  • Getting p.e. in elementary schools

    The National Conference on Program Planning in Game and Sports for Boys and Girls of elementary school age brought professionals together to discuss the value of organized games and sport for children younger than high school age. They realized beginning the teachings of P.E. at such as young age can give young kids different kind of skills they can use growing up.

    The intramural movement at the collegiate level was supported by the national Conference in Intramural sports for college men and women. Getting good quality physical activity throughout colleges was really expressed during this time.
  • First National Institute for girls' sports

    The first National Institute on Girls' sports was held, with conference participants discussing ways to encourage more girls and women to participate in sports. The division for girls' and women's sports played an important role in developing guidelines for girls' and women participation.
  • Special Olympics

    The growth of participation for individuals with disabilities increased during this time. Due to the increased participation, the Special Olympics was created.

    The prestigious American Academy of Physical Eduction voted to change its name to the American Academy of Kinisielogy. They recommended kinisielogy as the title of this discipline.
