The speeding Mercedes, driven by a chauffeur who was later found to have taken large amounts of alcohol beforehand, crashed into the 13th pillar in the Alma tunne on the right bank of the Seine River .

It also sparked a hatred for the paparazzi forever, since they were believed to be the ones who caused the accident.
