Umberto Christoforo Palanguez agrees to fly Triffid seeds out of Russia, in return for large amounts of money. The Russians shoot down the plane he was carrying the seeds in, however, and they are released from the plane.

Whil he is still a child, Bill is stung by a Triffid that he finds with his father in their backyard.

Bill soon meets Walter here, and the two become good friends, while Walter tells Bill about his different theories on Triffids. While working at the company Bill gets stung by Triffids a fair amount of times.

Temporarily blinded by a Triffid sting, Bill has to go to the hospital to be treated.

A meteor shower takes place that night, which everyone rushes to see. However, all who look at it become blinded the very next day.

When Bill wakesup the next morning, when he is supposed to be released from the hospital, and no nurses arrive when he rings the bell by his bed, he takes off the straps around his head, and soon realizes that everyone else in the hospital is blind.

While walking around London, trying to avoid the chaos, Bill comes across Josella Playton, and saves her from a groupd of Triffids who killed her father. The two agree to stick together for a while.

After recieving a signal from the university the previous night, Bill and Josella head to the university where they meet the Colonel and his group, who are tying to fgather whoever is left that can see to start a new community.

Coker and his gang try to capture all the sighted people at the University so that they can be used to help those who can't see getting food.

After almost all of his group dies or flees, Bill finally leaves them and comes across Coker again. The two leave for Tynsham.

Bill begins to travel to Sussex in order to find Josella. On the way, he meets a young girl named Susan.

Bill and Josella have their first child; David Masen.

Bill and Josella leave Susan at home and go out for a vacation. While there, they see a helicopter which worries them.

After seeing the helicopter they follow it to meet a man named Evan Simpson. He invites them to join the Island of Wright, where he is from.

Torrence claims that Bill and Josella must take care of 20 more blind people, and that if they don't, their land will be taken from them. Bill refuses but ticks Torrence into believing he agrees. They escape the Shirning that night, fighting off the Triffids and they head to the Islands of Wright, while Bill promises to Josella that they will return one day.
