Rev. Paris Sees Dancing
Rev. Paris went outside and saw Tituba, Abby, and some of the other girls dancing in the woods around a fire. He also saw a dress on the ground and a girl running naked through the woods. This event is significant because it started the trials. -
Abby Denies
Abigail denies the fact that they were practicing witchcraft. She says they were only dancing and that Betty only fainted from fright when Paris found them. This is significant because it is the first time Abby lies. -
Abigail Makes a Threat
Abigail tells the girls that she has told Parris everything about Betty says that Abigail did not tell Rev. Parris about drinking blood to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail tells girls to confess only that they danced and that Tituba conjured Ruth’s dead sisters. She says she will kill them if they say anything about what really happened. -
John and Elizabeth Fight
Elizabeth wants John to go to town and tell the court that Abby is lying and that the entire ordeal was a hoax. John is reluctant to do this because there is no hard evidence. Elizabeth also catches John when he says he and Abigail were alone in Rev. Paris’s house. This event is important because Elizabeth loses a little bit of faith in John. -
The Poppet
At the trials, Mary Warden, the housekeeper of the Proctors, makes a poppet, or small doll. When she returns home, she gives this poppet to Elizabeth as a gift. This event is significant because the doll is involved in the next event. -
Mary Protects Elizabeth During the Trials
When Elizabeth was brought up in the trials and accused, Mary defended her and said she wasn’t involved. This is important because it shows Mary’s loyalty to the family. -
Hale Visits
Rev. Hale comes to the Proctor house to question John. He is wary of him because John didn’t have good church attendance and one of his boys wasn’t baptized. When asked to recite the commandments, John forgot the adultery one. This is significant because it shows that the town doesn’t trust John. -
The Needle
When Cheever comes the the Proctors house with an arrest warrant, he asks Elizabeth if she has any poppets. She shows him the one Mary made for her and a needle is found inside. Earlier that day, Abigail had been stabbed with a needle in the stomach. Upon hearing this news, Elizabeth said something along the lines of “servers her right.” This provided more evidence against her. -
John Goes to the Court
John went to the court to confess that he and Abigail had an affair. He did this to show that Abby wanted Elizabeth dead so she could be with John. When the court asked Elizabeth about this, she denied that he had an affair. This made John an uncredible source. -
Mary at the Court
Mary says that she and the other girls were only pretending and none of it was real. The judge calls in Abby and the others and they say there is a cold wind. Then they start repeating everything Mary says and say she is a bird in the rafters. They do this to accuse Mary of bewitching them to save themselves. -
John Arrested
John proctor is arrested after Mary accuses him of making her sign the devil's book. This is important because it is the start of his downfall. Also, Elizabeth is pregnant so she will not hang. -
Hanging of John
At the end of the story, John is hanged because he will not confess to witchcraft. He says he doesn’t want another black mark on his name, the first being the affair. This event is important because it shows what happened in the end. -
